Spectacular Opening of 2019 Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships.
“4,522 Participants from 64 Countries. Highest Number of Participants Among International Taekwondo Championships Held in South Korea.”.
The opening ceremony for 2019 Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships was held at Seoul Jangchung Gymnasium on July 13, under the joint hosting of Kimunyong Sport Committee (President : Helen Kim, hereinafter KUYSC) and Seoul Sports Council. With 4,522 participants (1,800 overseas athletes) from 64 countries, 2019 Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships recorded the highest number of participants.
The 2019 Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships was arranged under the goal of honoring the spirit of the founding president, Unyong Kim, of World Taekwondo, settling Taekwondo as world martial arts sports, cultivating domestic and overseas talents, and promoting international sports diplomacy.
The opening ceremony was spectacular with 1,000 audiences and guests including
Organizing Chairperson, Dongsub Lee (President of National Assemblyman Taekwondo Federation), chairman Sijong Lee (governor of Chungcheongbuk-do and chairman of World Martial Arts Masterships Committee), IOC member Ching-Kuo Wu from Taiwan, Korea Sports & Olympic Committee president and IOC member Giheung Lee, IOC member Seungmin Yu, TPF chaiman Sangwook Lee, Kukkiwon head deputy Yeongryeol Choi, KTA president Changsin Choi, Kukkiwon 9-dan Federation president and Gyeonggi-do Taekwondo Association president Gyeongdeok Kim, Korean Taekwondo Association presidents, National Assembly member Kyungwon Nah, National Assembly member Insuk Park, Unyong Kim’s wife Dongsuk Park, KUYSC president Helen Kim, Taiwanese Taekwondo Association president Liang Ping Yu, and 11 heads of 11 KUYSC branches.
For event before the opening ceremony, KUYSC Taekwondo Demonstration Group and Korea National Sport University Taekwondo Demonstration Group showed performances. After the dining, 2nd Corps Headquarters’ Taekwondo Demonstration Group showed performance.
Secretary general Hyeonsuk Seo of Kimunyong Sport Committee said “I am really glad that the scale of participation in Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships is getting bigger. I would like to deliver my deep gratitude for team members and National Assembly member for their sincere efforts in opening this championship. We will try out best to develop Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships and we will make sure to finish this champisonship successfully.
In this year’s championship, new events such as belt match, belt poomsae, smashing, demonstrative team match are newly introduced. Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships will be held for 6 days from July 12 to July 17.
Meanwhile, the welcome banquet was held in a nearby hotel and the ceremony for appreciation plague and appointment certificate was held together.

7월 13일 오후 서울 장충체육관에서 ‘2019 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회(G1,)’가 김운용 스포츠위원회(위원장,헬렌 김, 이하 KUYSC)와 서울시체육회가 공동으로 주최한 가운데 개막식이 열렸다. 이번 대회에는 역대 최다 64개국에서 4,522명(해외 선수단 1800여명)이 참가했다.
대회는 故 김운용 세계태권도연맹 창설총재의 뜻을 기리고 태권도가 지속적인 세계무예 스포츠로 자리 잡고 폭 넓은 국내외 인재 양성과 국제 스포츠 외교의 발전을 도모하기 위해 마련됐다.
개막식에는 조직위원장인 이동섭(국회의원태권도연맹 총재), 충청북도 이시종 도지사겸 세계무예마스터쉽 위원장, 대만 우칭궈 IOC위원, 이기흥 대한체육회장 겸 IOC위원, 유승민 IOC위원, 이상욱 TPF 이사장, 최영렬 국기원장 직무대행, KTA 최창신 회장, 김경덕 국기원 9단 연맹 총재겸 경기도 태권도협회장과 국내 시·도 태권도협회장, 태권도 원로, 그리고 나경원, 박인숙 국회의원과 故 김운용 총재부인 박동숙 여사와 KUYSC 헬렌 김 위원장 , 해외에선 리앙 핑 우 대만 태권도협회장, KUYSC 11개 해외 지부장 등 내빈과 1.000여명의 관중이 웅집한 가운대가 화려한 개막식이 열렸다.
개막식 식전 행사로는 KUYSC 태권도시범단, 한국체육대학교 태권도시범단 시범. 식후 공연에는 2군단사령부 태권도 시범단 시범이 펼쳐졌다.
대회를 총괄한 KUYSC 서현석 사무총장은 “김운용컵 대회가 참가 규모가 점점 더 커지고 있어 기쁘게 생각한다. 대회 개최를 위해 최선을 다한 팀원들과 조직위원장이신 이동섭의원님께 깊은 감사에 인사를 드린다. 앞으로 김운용컵이 더욱 더 발전 할 수 있도록 노력할 것이며 성공적인 대회로 마칠 수 있도록 만전을 기하겠다”고 말했다.
올해는 띠별 겨루기, 띠별 품새, 기술격파, 시범 팀대항이 새롭게 신설됐으며 대회는 12일부터 17일까지 6일간 진행한다.
한편 인근 호텔에서 가진 저녁 환영 만찬에서는 공로자 감사패와 임명장 수여식을 가졌다.
