Opening Ceremony of World Taekwondo Cares Projects for Sri Lanka Held in Colombo.
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – The opening ceremony of World Taekwondo (WT) Cares projects for Sri Lanka was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on January 25, 2020, with the attendance of WT President Chungwon Choue Under the theme “Road to Champions,” the Sri Lanka WT Cares Program started in early July 2019 for a one-year period, with the aim of empowering destitute children in Sri Lanka.
The 2019-2020 WT Cares project benefits 60 male homeless children in Colombo and 23 street females in Kegalle. The Sri Lanka program is jointly supported by WT and the Asia Development Foundation (ADF). Under agreement, the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation carries out the Sri Lanka Cares projects.
With the financial support of the ADF, WT now carries out one-year Cares projects in Nepal, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. WT plans to expand the Cares projects to Mongolia and Indonesia in 2020.
The opening ceremony, which took place at the Indoor Stadium of Kelaniya University, drew hundreds of people, including all the 83 students of the Sri Lanka Cares project, and all the taekwondo medalists at the 2019 South Asian Games.
The ceremony featured a special taekwondo demonstration by all the 83 students of the Sri Lanka WT Cares projects.
During the ceremony, one male and one female student of the WT Cares program make presentations on their taekwondo experience, both appreciating WT for the Cares program.
During the ceremony, WT President Choue presented a WT appreciation plaque and a taekwondo development fund to Mr. Kanchana Jayarathna, president of the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation.
Dr. Choue also honored all the taekwondo medal winner at the 2019 South Asia Games in Nepal, and taekwondo officials.
“Through taekwondo education and training, I strongly believe that you will grow up as good global citizens and I wish some of you will be champions of international taekwondo championships,” said WT President Choue.
He continued to say, “As part of its efforts to fulfill its social responsibility for the mankind, WT is going all out to help empower the powerless, such as refugees, orphans and victims of natural disasters, around the world.”
On January 24, WT President Choue met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at the National Assembly to present him with an honorary WT Dan black belt. Clad in Dobok, the Sri Lankan prime minister broke a board to receive the honorary taekwondo black belt, which was broadcast nationwide in Sri Lanka. The prime minister served as president of Sri Lanka from 2005 to 2015.
While in Sri Lanka, WT President Choue met with Sri Lankan Olympic Committee President Suresh Subramaniam and Prof. D. M. Samasinghe, vice chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.
Kelaniya University plans to establish a taekwondo major at its Faculty of Science in the near future and the Sri Lanka NOC plans to establish a national sport university, in which a taekwondo major will be placed.
On January 23, a ceremony was held at the Olympic House of the Sri Lanka NOC to officially inaugurate the GCS International Sri Lanka Chapter.
At the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Kanchana Jayarathna, president of the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation, was sworn in as president of the GCS Sri Lanka Chapter. WT President Choue, who also serves as president of GCS International, gave Mr, Jayarathna a plaque of approval as head of the GCS Sri Lanka Chapter along with the GCS flag.
세계태권도연맹 '태권도 케어스' 프로젝트 개막식 스리랑카 콜롬보 성료
세계태권도연맹(World Taekwondo, WT 총재 조정원) 스리랑카 '태권도 케어스' (Taekwondo Cares) 프로젝트 개막식이 조정원 WT 총재가 참석한 가운데 스리랑카 콜롬보에서 지난 1월 25일 열렸다.
“챔피언을 향하여”라는 프로젝트 이름으로, 소외된 결손가정 어린이를 위한 태권도 무상 교육 프로그램인 '2019-2020년 스리랑카 태권도 케어스 프로젝트'는 WT가 주최하고 아시아발전재단(ADF, 이사장 김준일)이 후원하며, '스리랑카태권도협회'가 콜롬보 인근 및 케갈레 (Kegalle) 지역 태권도 단체들과 함께 지난 7월 2일부터 1년간 일정으로 운영하고 있다.
콜롬보 시내 켈라니야(Kelaniya)대학교 실내체육관에서 열린 개막식 행사에는 각계각층에서 수 백 명이 참가했다. 참석자 중에는 결손가정 어린이 WT Cares 태권도 교육생 83명(콜롬보 지역 남자 어린이 60명, 케겔레 지역 여자 어린이 23명) 과 지난 12월 네팔 카트만두에서 열린 2019남아시아경기 태권도 메달리스트 선수 전원이 참석했다.
아시아발전재단 재정 지원으로 WT는 현재 네팔, 캄보디아 그리고 스리랑카에서 1년 일정의 Cares 프로그램을 진행하고 있으며, 2020년에는 몽골과 인도네시아를 추가할 계획이다.
개막식 행사 특별 순서로 스리랑카 WT케어스 프로그램 교육 참가자 83명 전원의 태권도 시범이 있었으며 참석자들의 많은 박수를 받았다.
개막식 행사 중 WT Cares 프로젝트 참가자 남자 어린이 1명과 여자 어린이 1명이 자신들의 태권도 교육 소감을 발표했다. 두 어린이 모두 세계태권도연맹과 아시아발전재단에게 감사의 말을 전했다.
조정원 WT총재는 개막식 행사에서 칸차나 자야라트나(Kanchana Jayarathna) 스리랑카태권도협회장에게 감사패와 ‘태권도 발전기금’을 전달했다. 조 총재는 또한 2019남아시아경기 태권도 메달리스트 전원에게 감사장을 그리고 스리랑카태권도협회 및 체육계 인사들에게 WT감사장을 전달했다.
"스리랑카 태권도 케어스 프로젝트에 도움을 주고 있는 스리랑카태권도협회와 아시아발전재단에 감사를 드리며, 세계태권도연맹은 앞으로 스리랑카에서 더 많은 지원 프로그램을 하기를 원한다"고 조 총재는 개막식 인사말에서 말했다.
"태권도 교육과 훈련을 통해서 케어스 프로그램 참가자 모두가 좋은 세계 시민으로 성장하기를 바라며, 여러분들 중에서 국제태권도선수권대회 챔피언이 나오기를 바란다. 인류에 대한 사회적 책임 노력의 일환으로 WT는 전 세계 난민, 고아 및 자연재해 피해자들을 돕기 위한 노력을 계속할 것이다 "고 조 총재는 말했다.
지난 1월 24일, 조 총재는 스리랑카 국회의사당에서 지난 2005년부터 2015년까지 대통령을 역임하고 지난 11월 국무총리로 임명된 마힌다 라자팍사(Mahinda Rajapaksa)와 면담하였다. 이 자리에서 조 총재는 스리랑카 국무총리에게 WT명예단증을 수여했다. 명예단증 수여 직전 태권도복을 입고 라자팍사 국무총리가 송판을 격파하였으며 이 격파 장면이 스리랑카 모든 주요 방송을 타서 스리랑카 전역에 방영되었다.
스리랑카 체류 중 조 총재는 수레스 누브라마니암(Suresh Subramaniam) 스리랑카 국가올림픽위원회 위원장과 사마싱헤(D. M. Samashinghe) 켈라니아대학 부총장과 면담했다. 면담 자리에서 “스리랑카 정부는 조만간 국립체육대학을 설립하고 여기에 태권도 전공이나 학과를 개설하고, 켈라니아대학교도 태권도 전공을 조만간 설립할 계획”이라고 조 총재에게 말했다.
지난 1월 23일, 스리랑카NOC 올림픽하우스(Olympic House)에서 밝은사회클럽 국제본부 (GCS International) 스리랑카 국가본부 결성식 행사가 열렸다. 조 총재가 UN가맹 국제 NGO단체인 서울에 본부를 둔 GCS클럽 국제본부 총재를 지난 2006년부터 맡고 있다.
결성식 행사에서 조 총재는 제 1대 GCS스리랑카국가본부 총재로 임명된 칸차나 자야라트나(Kanchana Jayarathna) 스리랑카태권도협회장에게 인준패와 GCS 깃발을 전달했다.
