2022년 국기원태권도 미국엑스포 조직위원장 이현곤 국기원 가족 여러분 들께 인사올립니다!
자기나 본인 조직이 하지 않으면 안된다며 다른 사람 또는 조직이 하는것은 보이코트 하는 것으로 모자라, 할수 없도록 방해까지 하는 사람들이 있어, 그사람들의 면모를 살펴보니 보편적으로 초라하게 행사를 치루려고 한다거나, 아니면 국기원 재산 또는 대한민국 국고의 지원을 받아서 행사를 치루겠다는 사람들이 앞장서서, 황당하고 잘못된 루머들을 퍼트리고 있는것을 지켜 보면서, 최소한 국기원 을 사랑 하시는 국기원 가족 여러분들 께서는 확실히 알고 계셔야 될것 같아, 장황하지만 아래와 같이 설명을 올리오니, 번거롭더라도 끝까지 자세히 읽어 보시고, 국기원 과 대한민국 으로 부터 현찰을 지원 받지 않고도 행사를 성공적으로 치루어 내겠다고 자원한, 저희들을 가상히 여기시고 응원 부탁드립니다!
먼저 궁금해 하시는 분들이 있을것 같아 리 브라더스 가 이곳에서 국기원 엑스포를 주관하게된 동기 와 준비 상황을 아래와 같은 내용으로 공유합니다!
세계연맹 본부가 타 가맹국으로 넘어간다 하더라도, 태권도 종주국의 위상을 지키기 위해서는, 국기원 만큼은 대한민국에 영원한 본부도장으로서 자리를 지키면서 국기원 을 세계화 시켜야 된다는 생각으로 고심하고 계시던 이동섭 원장 께서는 트럼프 전 미국 대통령께 명예 단증을 수여해 주신뒤, 워싱턴 을 경유하여 귀국하시는 길에 이번 행사를 중재하고 성사시킨 워싱턴의 외각도시 리스버그 시의 최응길 관장의 선처로 저를 방문해주셔서 제가 잠깐 모실수 있었던 기회가 만들어 졌습니다.
그때 원장님 께서는 태권도 글로벌화 에 최상의 조건을 갖추었으며 전 세계의 중심도시로 다양한 국가 공관들이 밀집되어 있는 워싱턴에서, 펜다믹스 로 인하여 침체된 도장 살리기 위한 프로그램들 과 함께 품위있는 국기원 행사를 크게 한번 치르며 국기원을 홍보하고 싶다고 하시며 저에게 가능하면 심사숙고 해서 주관해 줄수 있느냐고 질문 하시더군요!
처음 생각으로는 이러한 큰 행사를 맡아 조직 하려면 준비 기간이 너무 짧음은 물론 내 나이도 있고해서 많이 망설였습니다!
하지만 곰곰이 생각해보니 내가 조금 부족 할지라도 저는 다섯 동생들이 뒤에서 저를 받쳐주고 있고 원장님 께서 숙원 하시는 국기원 태권도 글로벌화에 큰 족적을 남긴 태권도 인들로 기억될수 있다는 생각은 물론 , 펜다믹스로 어려운 시기에 태권도 가족들에게 용기와 도움을 준 태권도 가족이 될수있다는 마음에서 다시 진지하게 숙고 해보게 되었습니다!
그리고 국기원 엑스포 (행사) 제안서를 제출하고 60일 뒤 국기원 집행부로 부터 정식 승인을 받아 실행에 옮기고 있는 것입니다!
아무리 의미있는 행사 일지라도 얼마 남지않은 이동섭 원장의 제임 기간에 개인적인 큰 부담을 안고 모험 하는 행사를 성공적으로 치루어 내겠다고 선뜻 나서는 사람들을 쉽게 찾아 보기가 힘들것 같다는 생각이 앞서 제가 총대를 메고 추진해 보겠다고 자원했습니다!
알고 계시는 분들도 많겠지만 태권도 계의 기라성같은 박연희, 연환 형제 분들이, 1993년도 에 스포츠 태권도 홍보는 물론 올림픽 태권도가 성공적으로 유지될수 있게하는, 큰 업적을 남긴 세계 선수권 대회를 뉴욕 맨해튼의 매디슨 스쾌어 가든에서 주관 하면서 20만불 이상의 큰 손실을 보고 희생하신 전례 가 있었지요!
또한 국기원 한마당의 세계화를 선도 한다고 LA 에서 주관한 조직위원회 에서는 국기원 공금 3억원 의 손해를 끼쳤던 뼈아픈 기억들이 있었구요!
그래서 주제넘은 생각이라 할지 모르겠으나 순수한 마음의 발로로 희생을 감수하고 저희 6형제들이 관여하고 있는 태권도 자선 봉사단체 (ICG) 의 이름으로 해외 태권도 원로 및 유능한 동료들의 도움을 받아 행사를 정성껏 준비하고 있습니다!
제가 잘못 생각하고 있는 것 일까요?
물론 고등학교 또는 일반 대학의 교실이나 체육관 을 빌려 검소하게 행사를 치루게 되면 큰 수익 사업이 될수도 있음 을 부인하지 않겠습니다!
하지만 이동섭 원장님께서 국기원 글로벌화 를 촉진시키기 위하여 해외에서 처음으로 개최하는 국기원 공인 엑스포인지라 경제적으로 큰 손해를 감수 하더라도, 품위 있고 모범이 되는 대회로 정착 시켜야 된다고 생각했습니다.
그래서 저희 6형제 들에게 많은 부담과 무리가 뒤 따르지만 국기원 위상에 걸 맞고 세계대회 를 치룰 만한 장소를 섭외해서 준비하고 있습니다!

워싱턴은 전 세계 공관들이 제일 많이 운집해 있어 국기원 글로벌화를 도모하기 위하여 그들 초청이 쉽다는 것과 세계곳곳의 미디아들이 관심을 갖고 참여하려고 할수 있다는 것을 다시한번 강조합니다!
아래 기술하는 내용들은 함께 아울러 치루는 세계태권도 아카데미 프로그램 들의 준비 상황을 공유하는 것입니다!
하나: 크고 호적한 유명호텔을 빌려 참가자들의 불편을 최소화 하였습니다!
둘: 경비 때문에 과중한 스케줄을 소화해가며 효율적인 강의를 듣지못했던 점들을 감안 장소를 하루더 빌리는 방법으로 보완 했습니다!
셋: 교육 후 서로 교감을 나누며 글로벌 네트워크 을 구성하여 도장발전을 위한 정보 교환을 할수 있는 시간을 만들었습니다,
넷: 호텔 만찬 프로그램을 신설 피 교육자들이 국기원 원장 및 국기원 또는 연수원 간부들과 직접 교감을 나누며 소통할수 있는 장과 시간 또한 제공 됩니다!
다섯: 지금까지 국기원 행사에 참여하면 저렴한 도복을 지급 받아서 입지 않고 방치 해두는 사람들이 많은것을 알고 좀더 품위있는 도복에 자수를 새겨 제공해 주기로 했습니다!
여섯: 특별히 유명 강사들을 초빙 하여 도장 사범 또는 매니저들을 상대로 실용적인 도장 살리기 쎄미나를 이틀간에 걸쳐 거의 무료로 제공해 줍니다!
(본래는 무료로 해주기로 했으나 무료로하면 등록 해놓고 참석을 안하는 사람들이 많을수 있다 하여 전 프로그램 수강료 로 20불씩 을 받기로 하였으니 참고하시기 바랍니다!)
종종 있었던 전례와는 다르게 강사료 를 제외한 국기원 공금 에는 의지하지 않고 국기원 프로그램 외에 더 많은 프로그램들을 추가로만들었으며 저희들이 모두 부담하여 제공하는 것입니다!
차후에 이러한 행사를 주관 하려고 준비하시는 분들에게는 부담금 때문에 나를 원망할수 있겠으나 저는 피 교육자 들이 즐거운 마음으로 참여해서 크게 도움을 받아 갈수 있는 교육 환경을 만들어 주는 것을 가장 우선 순위로 두어야 된다고 조심 스럽게 피력해 봅니다!

“미국 스포츠 태권도의 선구자이신 존경하는 민경호 미국협회 초대 회장님 께서 저에게 이같은 대회를 주관해줘 고맙다고 하시며 추가로 보내주신 인포메이션 입니다! 1977년 3회 시카고 세계 태권도 대회 때도 30만불( 현재 한화 3억 3천 만원 이상)을 손해 보시면서해외에서 첫번째 치루는 세계대회의 성공 과 홍보를 위해서 신경선 사장님께서 자기 회사 이름으로 주관 하셨다 하시는군요!
87세 의 회장님 본인께서 도울일 있으면 돕겠다고 보내주신 따뜻한 격려의 말씀이 담긴 글을 영문 끝 부분에 함께 공유합니다!”

Is it Greediness or Sacrifice?
Hello! From the 2022 USA Kukkiwon TaeKwonDo Expo Organizing Committee Chairman H.K. Lee!
I hear many wrong rumors going around about this event, that’s why we want to at least let the organizing Committee and Kukkiwon family members know about the proper information, that is why we explain the details of information like below. Please read throughly before attending the meeting, even it’s a long story!
First of all, I am explaining to everyone why the Lee Brothers are hosting the USA Kukkiwon Expo in the Washington, DC area.
Kukkiwon president Dongsup Lee stopped by my Dojang for a short greeting visit and to share with me about his trip to the USA on his way home to Korea after presenting an honorary black belt to Donald Trump, former president of the USA.
At that time he thoughtfully expressed how he wanted to have some of biggest Kukkiwon events at the hub and world capital of Washington, DC and asked me to throughly research about the possibilities. Then, if possible, he said he would like to humbly request that he could consider me to organize the Kukkiwon Presidents Cup TaeKwonDo Championship in Washington, DC!
At first I was very hesitant because the preparation time was too short, as well as I considered that I may be too old to be conducting these types of big events!
However, after thinking it over seriously, we realized that however small our contribution might be, the timing and magnitude of this event could contribute much to the globalization of TaeKwonDo, and give very important guidance and encouragement to many of our TaeKwonDo families after suffering from the Covid-19 Pandemic.
60 days after putting in the application, we got final approval and confirmation letters from Kukkiwon and officially started organizing and publishing this event.
The reason we decided to take the job is that, no matter how prestigious the event is, it can still be very difficult to find anyone else willing to take the job, put in the necessary countless efforts and risk losing lots of money to make this event successful!
Many of you may already know that the 1993 World TaeKwonDo Championship was held at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York, hosted by highly respected brother TaeKwonDo Grandmasters Yeon Hee and Yeon Hwan Park. The event was a huge promotion of sports TaeKwonDo in the USA and contributed to TaeKwonDo remaining an official international Olympic sport. But you may not know that they had to sacrifice over 200 thousand dollars while hosting this event!
Also, for the globalization of Kukkiwon, the Kukkiwon HanMaDang was held in LA, but it was unsuccessful even though it was organized and conducted by a Kukkiwon representative spending almost 300 thousand dollars from the Kukkiwon budget!
So that made us believe that we may find it very difficult to find someone willing to sacrifice this much time and money to host this type of event. That is why we six Lee Brothers are voluntarily hosting this event and getting lots of support from many respective world renowned TaeKwonDo families. We are working through one TaeKwonDo non profit organization we are involved with as board members: (ICG) INTERNATIONAL COALITION FOR GOOD HEALTH & GOOD FRIENDS), A Global Taekwondo Community Service Group
Am I thinking wrong?
I know we are sure to have profitable events if we rent small spaces like normal high school or college classrooms and gymnasiums!
However, after much consideration of how we may have to sacrifice a lot of time and money, we decided to rent a 1st class arena for future reference, social standing and reputation of Kukkiwon as well as for globalization of Kukkiwon TaeKwonDo!
All TaeKwonDo families please come and join us to witness this event in person! I believe you will be proud to be with us at the event site!
We are confident that through this event we can stimulate globalization of Kukkiwon TaeKwonDo because the most diplomats from the most countries in the world are residing in the Washington, DC area. It is so easy to invite them to attend this event as well as build high interest in each country’s media groups!
At this time I would like to also share about preparation for the Kukkiwon’s World TaeKwonDo Academy Licensing Seminars also being held as part of the Kukkiwon Expo.
One: to be hosted in a 1st class hotel’s huge ballroom in order to eliminate previous uncomfortable educational environments!
Two: Previously, because of rental expenses, participants have had to take too many hours a day of instruction, which was not efficient or productive. So we rented the ballrooms one more day to reduce these problems!
Three: After each day’s seminars, participants get together to build network and friendships for discussing with each other about instruction and dojang operations!
Four: we are offering a hotel table service dinner banquet with many different programs with the Kukkiwon president and officials!
Five: Unlike opreviously, for the 1st time we have decided to include Kukkiwon’s new logo on embroidered 1st Class uniform!
Six: for the first time we are offering a Dojang Operations seminar in conjunction with the master licensing seminars! We have invited well respected industry leaders with promises to help everyone’s practical needs! Originally we planned to not charge any fees but if we don’t charge any fees some people may not show up after listing their name. Therefore instructors are asked to pay just $20 for the entire two days!
For all expenses other than the Kukkiwon original programs’ instructors’ wages, for any other additional programs, the Lee brothers are taking the responsibility and contributing everything.
In the future, anyone who wants to host this type of event may blame us and feel pressure for preparing seeding funds, but l believe when our goal is to produce better educated individuals, we must first consider about the education programs and pleasant environment!

Good morning, Chair Lee.
I appreciate your diligent hard work for the promotion of taekwondo in the USA through Kukkiwon. In 1977 at the 3rd World Taekwondo Championship in Chicago. Mr. Kyung Sun Shin, owner of East/West Market Exchange and Organizing Chairman lost close to thirty thousand dollars even though the late Dr. Kim and I (as National AAU Chairman) traveled to just about every state except Alaska to promote the championship.
Therefore, I do know that organizing a major taekwondo event requires sacrifice, dedication and funds. By the way, I do not have a Zoom program on my computer. If there is any other way I can help, please let me know.
