President Seung-ho Bang of Phillips Group Leads Taekwondo and Eco-Friendly Companies as Global Leader

Seung-ho Bang, President of Phillips Group, is the head of the Korean Taekwondo and he leads World Police Taekwondo Federation and World Professional Taekwondo Federation as well as the eco-friendly businesses trending around the world. While Taekwondo and eco-friendly business seem unrelated, they commonly pursue the positive goal of health and earth environment. Let’s hear the story from President Bang who runs businesses and federations with a strong driving force.

Q: Could you describe World Police Taekwondo Federation?

⇒World Police Taekwondo Federation was registered and approved by Ministry of Culture & Tourism in 2010 and it is globally recognized with other major Taekwondo associations including Kukkiwon, World Taekwondo Federation, Korea Taekwondo Association, and Taekwondo Promotion Federation. Currently, World Police Taekwondo Federation works with 86 member countries around the world.

World Police Taekwondo Federation is a non-governmental organization and it provides educations and trainings on Taekwondo, defensive tactics, arresting tactics, and protest control tactics for police officers. It basically offers the physical and mental methods so that police officers around the world can maintain the public orders efficiently. It also trains the police officers on defense, control, and arrest for regulating and preventing crimes. In other others, World Police Taekwondo Federation is an organization for fostering the excellent police officers.

World Police Taekwondo Federation also promotes harmony, friendly relationship, and exchange of martial arts in each country to contribute on the peace and social order of the global citizens.

World Police Taekwondo Federation is also in charge of spreading police martial arts to elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools in each country and this is gradually shared to parents and social volunteer groups, too. Such project is getting favorable reactions for enhancing the youth safety. Furthermore, World Police Taekwondo Federation not only fosters police martial arts trainer but also trains skills, develops new skills, and interact with each member by holding World Police Taekwondo Championship (Arrest Tactics, Defensive Tactics).

Moreover, World Police Taekwondo Federation also trains the upgraded Kukki Taekwondo for the global police officers. It fosters Taekwondo instructors and sends them to different countries to establish the status of Korea and Korean Taekwondo. Thanks to such positive results, a lot of non-member countries are willing to join World Police Taekwondo Federation. 

Q: What Does World Police Taekwondo Federation Pursue?

⇒World Police Taekwondo Federation promotes the spread and development of Taekwondo, unity between police officers around the world, and globalization of police Taekwondo. The ideal model is “Fast, Strong, and Accurate”. World Police Taekwondo Federation tries to establish the groundwork of sports diplomacy for spreading the superiority of Korean police Taekwondo and uniting the member countries together. World Police Taekwondo Federation also hopes to hold the sports festivals such as Taekwondo Olympics with police Taekwondo.

Q: You are also the president of World Professional Taekwondo Federation. Could you describe it?

⇒When amateur Taekwondo athletes finish their athletic life, World Professional Taekwondo Federation offers them the opportunity to work as a professional athlete.

World Professional Taekwondo Federation also opens another form of league for other mixed martial art athletes. In other words, the main goal of World Professional Taekwondo Federation is to offer the broader opportunities as a professional athlete by holding the professional leagues just like UFC. As Taekwondo became a popular martial art distributed around 211 countries, the federation plans to emphasize “Martial Art Courtesy” in Taekwondo unlike other martial arts or UFC.

World Professional Taekwondo Federation also aims to globalize Taekwondo. In response, it plans to hold a professional championship under the new paradigm where martial artists who trained different martial arts compete together based on the game rules of World Professional Taekwondo Federation.

In the championship, the professional athletes will be getting prize money, too. World Professional Taekwondo Federation will be combining the Korean wave, different cultures and art contents, and professional championship to open up the new global festival for people of all ages and genders. This will allow more job openings and the profits from such business will be donated back to the society.

World Professional Taekwondo Federation seeks to open up the new path where amateur and professional Taekwondo can co-exist and develop together. As the president of World Professional Taekwondo Federation, I will fulfill my role as a control tower and try my best to develop Taekwondo in terms of quality and systems.

Q: Could you also explain about Phillips Group?

⇒“Phillips” brand started from Birmingham, The United Kingdom, in 1892. It began from mass production of bicycles and later produced military vehicles and tanks for special units of Allied Forces during First World War.

I acquired a license for Phillips brand and started production of electric vehicles, vehicle battery, and electric motorcycles. Phillips contributes on decarbonized growth and its brand philosophy is to research on the electric vehicles for the happiness of the mankind. Phillips also practices R&D visions.

Our goal is to develop into a global electric vehicle group that creates special and new history. Phillips Group also seeks to create the best value through challenge and innovation.

Phillips Group hopes to lead more pleasant, safer, and smarter lifestyle for the global communities and it plans to create better and more job openings. In response, it plans to provide specialized skill training, education, and develop technologies to contribute on the growth of world economy.

Q: You must be busy with corporate activities (Phillips Group) and social activities. Do you have a life principle?

⇒Some say that keeping up with both business and sports would be physically challenging. However, that’s not true. As you contribute to the good deeds for the society and world such as climate change movement and de-carbonization, it will bring synergy effect in your life vitality. Eventually, my social activities and economic activities are in a virtuous circulation.  

Q: What’s your future plans?

⇒I will keep up with my sincere care for World Police Taekwondo Federation, World Professional Taekwondo Federation, and Phillips Group. Since my social activities and corporate activities will contribute to the global community, I will try my best to continue these activities.

세계경찰태권도연맹과 세계프로페셔널태권도연맹이라는 K태권도 수장이면서, 세계적인 트렌드인 친환경 사업을 이끌어가는 필립스그룹 방승호 회장. 언뜻 보기에는 개연성이 없어 보이지만 건강과 지구 환경이라는 긍정적인 목표를 추구하는 점에서 같다. 강한 추진력으로 큰 그림을 그리며 사업과 연맹 운영을 하는 방승호 회장의 얘기를 들어봤다.

Q: 세계경찰태권도연맹은 어떤 단체인가?

⇒ 세계경찰태권도연맹은 2010년에 문화체육관광부에 등록 인가를 받아 운영하고 있다. 세계경찰태권도연맹은 주요 태권도 단체들(국기원, 세계태권도연맹, 대한태권도협회, 태권도진흥재단)과 함께 국제적으로 인정받는 단체이다. 현재 전 세계 86개 회원국이 가입되어있다.

회원국 경찰관들에게 태권도 및 호신술, 범인 검거술, 체포술, 시위 진압술 등을 교육하고 있다. 비영리단체이다. 전 세계 경찰들이 치안 공무를 효율적으로 할 수 있도록 육체적, 정신적 방법들을 제시하는 것이다. 범죄 규제와 방지를 잘할 수 있도록 경찰들에게 방어, 제압, 체포 등을 단련시킨다. 결론적으로 우수한 경찰 인재를 양성시키는 조직이라고 할 수 있다.

각국 경찰의 화합과 친선, 고유무술 교류를 통해 세계 시민의 평화와 안녕, 사회질서 유지에 기여하고자 한다.

경찰무도를 세계 각국의 초, 중, 고교에 보급하는 역할도 하고 있다. 이는 학부모들과 사회봉사단체 등에도 단계적으로 공유해 나가고 있다. 청소년들의 안전에 대한 기대가 높아지는 만큼 긍정적인 반응이다. 경찰무도 지도자를 양성함은 물론 세계경찰태권도선수권대회(체포술, 연행술, 포박술, 호신술)를 통한 기술 숙지 및 신기술 개발과 교류에도 노력한다.

또한 전 세계 경찰들에게 업그레이드된 국기 태권도를 교육하는 역할도 하고 있다. 우리 연맹은 지도자를 육성하여 여러 나라에 파견함으로써 우리나라의 태권도와 국가 위상을 높이고 있다. 현재는 비회원국이지만 이러한 긍정적인 결과에 관심이 있는 나라들에서 세계경찰태권도연맹 가입을 희망하고 있다.

Q: 세계경찰태권도연맹이 추구하는 방향은?

⇒ 고유한 한국 문화의 소산인 태권도의 보급 발전과 세계 각국 경찰의 단결 및 경찰태권도의 세계화를 도모하고 있다. “빠르게, 강하게, 정확하게”를 종목의 이상적인 모델로 추구하고 있다. 대한민국 경찰태권도의 우수성을 세계에 알리고 회원국과 서로 화합하고 하나가 되는 스포츠 외교의 기틀을 마련하고자 한다. 우리 경찰태권도가 주축이 되어 태권도 올림픽과 같은 축제를 여는 목표도 가지고 있다.

Q: 세계프로페셔널태권도연맹 총재도 맡고 있다. 어떤 단체인가?

⇒ 세계프로페셔널태권도연맹(WPTF)은 아마추어 태권도 선수생활을 마친 후 프로 선수로서의 진출 기회를 열어 일자리 창출을 제공하고자 한다.

또한, 타 종합격투기 선수들에게도 또 다른 형태의 리그를 제공하는 기회도 제공된다고 볼 수 있다. 프로 선수로서 폭넓은 기회를 주는 데 목적을 둔 단체이다. UFC와 같은 프로 세계를 다. 세계 211개국에 보급할 만큼 가장 인기 있는 무도로 자리매김한 태권도에 ‘예절 교육을 만들 계획이다. 프로페셔널태권도는 UFC와 달리 무예의 예절을 강조하는 형태를 취할 것이강조할 것이다.

당연히 글로벌화를 목표하고 있다. 세계 각국의 다양한 종합 격투기를 수련한 모든 무예인이 WPTF에서 제시한 경기룰에 맞춰서 기량을 겨룰 수 있는 새로운 패러다임의 프로 대회를 개최할 생각이다.

프로인 만큼 성적에 따라 다양하게 상금을 수여할 것이다. 우리 연맹은 대한민국 한류와 세계 각국의 다양한 문화·예술 콘텐츠 그리고 프로 경기를 접목한 기획 사업을 펼칠 것이다. 대회는 남녀노소 모두가 즐길 수 있는 새로운 축제의 장을 열겠다. 새로운 일자리를 창출하고 사업 성과로 얻은 수익을 사회에 환원하겠다.

아마추어 태권도와 프로태권도가 상생, 발전할 수 있도록 새로운 길을 개척하고자 한다. 나 자신 WPTF 총재로서 작으나마 가온머리(Controltower) 역할을 충실히 하여 질적, 제도적 성장 발전을 위한 노력을 게을리 하지 않을 생각이다.

Q: 필립스그룹은 어떤 회사인가?

⇒ 필립스(PHILLIPS) 브랜드는 1892년 영국 버밍엄 지역에서 탄생했다. 자전거 대량 생산을 시작으로 1차 세계대전 당시 연합군 특수 부대를 위한 군용 차량과 탱크를 생산했다.

나는 영국 필립스 브랜드 라이센스를 취득했다. 전기자동차, 차량배터리, 전기 오토바이 생산에 돌입했다. 탈탄소 성장에 기여하며 인류 행복에 도움을 주는 전기차 연구를 기업이념 바탕으로 한 회사이다. 늘 R&D비전을 실천한다.

“특별하고 새로운 역사를 만들어 나가는 글로벌 전기차 그룹으로 성장해 나가겠다”는 게 나와 직원들의 목표이다. 도전과 혁신을 통해 최고의 가치를 창출하는 것이 필립스그룹의 브랜드 철학이다.

⇒ 사업과 스포츠를 병행하면 물리적으로 힘이 들 것으로 생각하기 쉽지만 그렇지 않다. 기후변화와 탈탄소처럼 사회와 세계에 봉사하는 선한 일을 하다 보면 사업과 인생 활력에도 시너지를 얻을 수 있다. 결국, 내가 하는 사회 활동과 경제활동은 선순환 구조를 이루고 있다.

Q: 향후 계획은?

⇒ 세계경찰태권도연맹, 세계프로페셔널태권도연맹, 필립스그룹 업무를 어느 것 하나 소홀하게 다루지 않을 것이다. 내가 추진하는 사회 활동과 기업 활동이 모두 지구촌에 도움을 주는 일인 만큼 세 가지가 모두 성공하도록 최선을 다할 것이다.
