Watching Dr. Lee Ji-sung’s recent actions toward reviving the taekwondo Dojang is truly astounding.

Dr. Lee started his YouTube channel, ‘함께 행동하는 이지성 태권도’ on August 4th, getting an explosive attention with over 6,000 views and 300 subscribers in just over a month.

Meanwhile I became curious.

Why did he suddenly become interested in ‘dojang reviving’ at this point?

The following is how he replied which I’ve decided not to edit hoping to better capture his sincere feelings.

“I’ve been thinking a lot lately as I looked back on the past 50 years with Taekwondo. In particular, we are proud to say that we’ve been active in various Taekwondo organizations starting with the Kukkiwon Structural Reform Committee in 2010. However since the pandemic, there were too many leaders closing down their taekwondo dojangs while working in courier services, struggling to save their dojangs. This hardship wasn’t only a couple of people’s problem, it was nationwide; even the instructors abroad were facing the same challenges no matter the country. COVID-19 isn’t over. As a proof, I vividly witnessed the growing resentment of the leaders against the inattentiveness and indifference of Taekwondo groups and institutions. Watching this happen was painful as a junior, but I was also so ashamed as a senior.

What can I really do for them? And what can be done for Taekwondo? I kept thinking about the ways in reviving the taekwondo dojangs again.

After much deliberation, videos were my conclusion. I thought, ‘this would be accessible anywhere in the world!’. To be honest, I wasn't confident at first. But with the thought of being able to help in even a tiny bit gave me confidence. No matter how far they were, I wanted to spread hope by helping out leaders and instructors through these videos of mine. I wanted to tell them, ‘don’t give up on Teakwondo.‘

While traveling around the country, these questions bothered me.

Why can't institutions and organizations with vested interests think of solutions?

If these are the owners of Taekwondo, why aren’t they interested?

Are these people being overlooked because they’re individual business owners?

I was so angry at the thought but now,

I only think about the leaders,

with the idea of reviving Taekwondo,

and with determination that it should all start from taekwondo dojangs.

It’s tiring, but this is what motivates me to wake up early in the morning, pack my shooting equipment and script and go.”

Dr. Lee says it's not over yet.

I also, as a journalist, don’t think it would be easy.

When I look up Taekwondo on YouTube, the videos that I found are mostly weighed towards the sport and its competitions. Dr. Lee’s channel is already on the 3rd of the list if you search ‘Taekwondo’ alone.

This would be proof of the difficulties that Taekwondo and its dojangs are facing.

As Dr. Lee states, he cannot just sit back on the hardships that these instructors and leaders of Taekwondo are facing. Not only will he continue to overcome this difficult journey— to be proud as a senior and junior in the field— he is also dreaming something bigger.

In the so called “old school, vertical structure” of the Taekwondo world, Dr. Lee Ji-sung’s move of actually trying to think by the sides of dojang leaders and putting them into action sure deserves a round of applause.

최근 이지성 박사의 도장 활성화에 대한 행보를 지켜보면 가히 폭풍우가 몰아치듯 무서울 정도다.

지난 8월 4일에 유튜브 ‘함께 행동하는 이지성 태권도’를 오픈한 이지성 박사는 이제 한 달 남짓 지난 시점에 조회 수가 이미 6천 회를 넘겼고 구독자 또한 300명을 넘어서고 있다. 과연 폭발적인 반응이다.

그런데, 기자는 의문이 생겼다.

왜 이 시점에 갑자기 도장 활성화에 관심을 가지게 된 것일까?

그는 이렇게 대답했고 그의 솔직한 심정을 담기 위해 편집 없이 그대로 싣기로 했다.

“저는 태권도와 함께 한 지난 50년을 돌아보면서 최근 많은 생각에 잠겼습니다. 특히 2010년 국기원 구조개혁위원회를 시작으로 태권도의 각 단체에서 여러 활동을 해왔다고 자부할 수 있습니다. 하지만 2020년부터 시작된 코로나-19 펜데믹으로 태권도장들이 줄 폐업을 하고, 택배로 연명하고, 끝까지 태권도장을 지키기 위해 노력했던 수많은 지도자들이 주변에 너무나 많았습니다. 이 고통은 한 두 곳을 넘어 전국 도장으로 확대되고, 해외에 계신 사범님들까지도 어느 국가라고 할 것 없이 모두가 같았습니다. 코로나-19는 아직 끝나지 않은 진행형입니다. 그것을 방증이라도 하듯 태권도 단체, 기관의 무성의와 무관심에 대해 지도자들의 원성이 점점 높아지는 것을 생생히 지켜보았습니다. 저는 그들을 생각하며 복잡한 심경 속에서 하루하루를 보냈습니다. 후배로서도 괴로웠고, 선배로서도 너무나 부끄러웠습니다.

내가 과연 이들을 위해 할 수 있는 일은 무엇일까? 그리고 태권도를 위해 할 수 있는 일은 무엇일까? 다시 태권도장이 활성화할 수 있는 방법은 무엇일까?를 계속 고민했습니다.

고심 끝에 내린 결론은 영상이었습니다. 그래야 전 세계 어느 곳에서나 볼 수도 들을 수도 있겠구나! 하는 생각이었습니다. 솔직히 자신은 없었지만, 한 가지 드는 생각은 그들에게 조금이나마 도움이 될 수 있다면 아무리 먼 거리라도, 발품을 팔아서라도 도장 현장에 찾아가 도장 활성화에 도움이 되는 영상을 제작하여 힘들어하는 지도자들과 도장 사범들에게 희망을 주어야겠다고 말입니다. 태권도를 포기하지 말라고 말입니다.

그렇게 전국을 돌아다니며,

한편으로는 기득권의 기관과 단체들은 왜 이런 생각을 하지 못할까?

이들이 태권도의 주인이건대, 도대체 왜 그들은 관심조차 없는 것일까?

개인사업자라는 이유로 가히 방관만 하는 것은 아닐까?

라는 생각에 너무 화가 났습니다. 하지만 이제는

오로지 지도자만 생각하는 마음으로

태권도장 활성화라는 생각으로

태권도의 시작은 태권도장이어야 한다는 일념으로

피곤하지만 새벽부터 일어나 촬영 장비와 시나리오를 챙겨 집을 나섭니다.”

아직 끝나지 않았다는 이지성 박사!

기자가 보기에도 쉽지 않은 일인 것 같다.

기자가 유튜브에서 태권도를 검색하니 거의 종목과 대회에 치우친 영상들 뿐이다. 태권도만 검색해도 벌써 3번째로 올라 와있다.

관심이 많다는 것은 그만큼 태권도와 태권도장이 힘들다는 반증이 아닐까?

태권도의 주인인 사범들이 어려워지는 상황을 그냥 지켜볼 수 없다는

이지성 박사는 선배로서나 후배로서도 부끄럽지 않도록 앞으로도 이 어려운 길을 헤쳐 나가겠다고 한다. 또 그는 가히 더 큰 꿈을 꾸고 있는 듯 했다.

특히, 권위를 앞세워 수직적 줄세우기에 익숙한 태권도계에서

그것도 말로써만이 아닌 글로써만이 아닌

실제 도장 지도자들을 생각하고 행동으로 옮기는 이지성 박사의 행보는

앞으로 니편 내편을 망라하고라도 당연히 칭찬해야 마땅할 것이다.
