Kim Pyeong, the new president of the Gyeonggi-do Taekwondo Association (GTA), held his first press conference since taking office at the Taegeuk room on the fifth floor of the association at 11 p.m. on April 14, 2025, and explained the future vision of the Taekwondo world and the development strategy of the association.

At this press conference, president Kim said, "I already wanted to make this kind of event, meet Taekwondo reporters, communicate often, and have a meal."

Pledges to Prioritize Member Welfare and On-Site Communication

Kim Pyung, the newly appointed president of the Gyeonggi-do Taekwondo Association, has pledged to place the highest priority on improving member welfare. He announced plans to implement practical support measures, including lowering registration fees for new Dojangs.

“Given the increasing difficulties in running dojangs, communication with members is more important than ever,” Kim stated. “I will make every effort to attend tournaments and seminars organized by local city and county associations to hear directly from the field.” He also expressed his willingness to provide financial support when necessary.

While acknowledging ongoing concerns over low birth rates and their impact on dojang operations, he warned of a potentially greater crisis looming on the international stage. “If, in five years, leadership positions in the World Taekwondo Federation and continental unions are dominated by candidates from countries other than Korea, the domestic Taekwondo community may face a serious turning point,” he said.

1. Position on Taekwondo Elections
president Kim said he would support candidates who present the future and vision of Taekwondo without leaning toward specific people or camps in connection with major elections scheduled this year, including Kukkiwon, president of the Asian Taekwondo Federation, and vice president of the World Taekwondo Federation.

2. Reinforcing revenue generation and member welfare
For the association's financial independence, it is promoting the planning of insurance and mutual aid products through the Taekwondo Mutual Aid Association and the reduction of profits through the payment of subsidies to related organizations. In addition, it plans to strengthen the welfare of members by expanding its business and generating profits through the foundation GTA.

3. Strengthen communication with members
president Kim said he will lower the association's threshold through meetings with members of city and county branches and strengthen communication by directly listening to the opinions of members. Through this, he is also seeking ways to strengthen support measures for city and county branches.

president Kim first contacted those who did not support him after the election and proposed to promote the development of the association together, and expressed his position to respond firmly to negative attacks.

Through this meeting, president Kim emphasized the association's future vision and member-centered operation policy, and presented various strategies for the development of the taekwondo world.

Meanwhile, the GTA is the largest association, leading 2,700 member stamps and 400,000 members out of 17 city and provincial associations in Korea.

이어 “도장 운영이 점차 어려워지는 현실 속에서, 회원들과의 소통이 어느 때보다 중요하다”며 “시군협회가 주관하는 각종 대회와 세미나에 최대한 참석해 현장의 목소리를 직접 듣겠다”고 강조했다. 또한 필요한 경우, 경제적 지원도 아끼지 않겠다는 입장을 내비쳤다.

경기도 북부 지역에 제2 연락소나 사무실을 설치할 계획은 현재 없다고 선을 그었다. 그는 “출산율 저하로 도장 경영의 어려움이 계속 제기되고 있지만, 보다 큰 위기는 국제 태권도계의 지도부 변화에서 올 수 있다”며 “향후 5년 내 세계태권도연맹과 각 대륙연맹 총재 선거에서 한국이 주도권을 잃을 경우, 국내 태권도계가 중대한 전환점을 맞이할 수 있다”고 전망했다.김평 신임 경기도태권도협회장은 회원 복지 향상을 최우선 과제로 삼고, 신입 도장 등록비 인하 등을 포함한 실질적 지원 방안을 적극 추진하겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

2. 수익 창출 및 회원 복지 강화

협회의 재정 자립을 위해 태권도공제회를 통한 보험 및 상조상품 기획, 유관단체 지원금 지급을 통한 수익금 환원 등을 추진하고 있다. 또한, 재단법인 GTA를 통해 사업 확장과 수익 창출로 회원 복리후생을 강화할 계획이다.

3. 회원과의 소통 강화

김 회장은 시·군 지회별로 회원들과의 간담회를 통해 협회의 문턱을 낮추고, 회원들의 의견을 직접 듣는 소통을 강화하겠다고 밝혔다. 이를 통해 시·군 지회의 지원책도 강화할 방안을 모색 중이다.

4. 선거 이후 통합 노력

김 회장은 선거 이후 자신을 지지하지 않았던 이들과도 먼저 연락하여 함께 협회 발전을 도모하자고 제안했으며, 네거티브 공격에 대해서는 단호히 대응하겠다는 입장을 밝혔다.

이번 간담회를 통해 김 회장은 협회의 미래 비전과 회원 중심의 운영 방침을 강조하며, 태권도계의 발전을 위한 다양한 전략을 제시했다.

한편 GTA는 한국의 17개시도 협회중 2700여 개의 회원도장과 40여 만여명의 회원을 이끌고 있는 최대 협회이다.
