– A global festival for Taekwondo practitioners from around the world
The 2025 Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships will be held from July 5 to 8 at Gijang Arena in Busan, South Korea. The event is co-hosted by Kukkiwon and the Kimunyong Sports Committee, and organized by the Kimunyong Cup Organizing Committee.
Now in its 8th year, the tournament honors the legacy of the late Dr. Kim Un-Yong, former Vice President of the IOC and founder of both Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo. It aims to promote global Taekwondo unity and reinforce its identity as an Olympic sport.
Over 5,000 participants including athletes, coaches, and referees from more than 50 countries are expected to compete in various categories such as poomsae, sparring, breaking, and creative performances. The event offers rising Korean athletes a valuable opportunity to compete on the international stage.
This year’s tournament carries additional significance with the appointment of Kim Sae-woong, grandson of Dr. Kim Un-Yong, as the Honorary Chair of the Kimunyong Sports Committee.
The organizing committee emphasizes fair play, safety, and athlete convenience through close cooperation between local and national authorities. Gijang, known for its scenic beauty and strong infrastructure, is considered an ideal host city. The venue, Gijang Indoor Gymnasium, boasts state-of-the-art facilities and accessibility.
Jung Jong-bok, Mayor of Gijang County, stated, “It is a great honor to host a global Taekwondo event that represents the sport’s international future. We will do our utmost to ensure its success.”
Chairman Choi Jae-choon of the Kimunyong Sports Committee added, “This event will not only celebrate the spirit of Taekwondo but also serve as a platform for peace and cultural exchange. We are preparing a festival that blends tradition and innovation.”
The championships will also feature cultural performances, interactive booths, and local specialty promotions, enriching the visitor experience and boosting the regional economy.

2025 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회가 오는 7월 5일부터 8일까지 4일간 부산광역시 기장군 기장실내체육관에서 열린다. 이번 대회는 국기원과 김운용스포츠위원회가 공동 주최하고, 김운용컵 조직위원회가 주관한다.
올해로 8회를 맞는 김운용컵은 고(故) 김운용 전 IOC 부위원장의 정신을 계승하고, 태권도의 세계화와 올림픽 정체성을 강화하기 위한 글로벌 태권도 축제다. 김운용 총재는 태권도의 올림픽 정식 종목 채택과 세계화를 이끈 핵심 인물로 평가받는다.
이번 대회에는 전 세계 50개국에서 5,000여 명의 선수, 지도자, 심판단이 참가할 예정이며, 품새·겨루기·격파·경연 등 다양한 종목이 치러진다. 특히 국내 유망주들에게 세계 무대를 경험할 소중한 기회가 될 것으로 기대된다.
김세웅 김운용스포츠위원회 명예위원장은 고(故) 김운용 총재의 장손으로서 이번 대회를 더욱 뜻깊게 만들 예정이다. 대회 조직위는 지역과 중앙의 유기적 협력, 공정한 운영, 참가자 편의 증진에 집중하고 있다.
부산 기장군은 천혜의 자연환경과 관광 인프라를 갖춘 지역으로, 최신 시설을 갖춘 기장실내체육관은 국제대회 개최지로 손색이 없다는 평가다.
정종복 기장군수는 “기장군이 태권도 세계화를 선도하는 대회의 개최지로 선정된 것은 매우 영광이며, 성공적인 대회가 될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.
최재춘 김운용스포츠위원회 위원장은 “이번 대회는 세계 태권도인이 함께 모여 평화를 나누는 무대이자, 전통과 혁신이 조화를 이루는 축제가 될 것”이라고 전했다.
대회 기간 중에는 문화 공연, 체험 부스, 지역 특산품 홍보 등 다양한 부대행사도 열려 관람객에게 풍성한 즐거움을 제공할 예정이다.
