GB’s Walkden, Korea’s Daehoon Lee, Named Players of Year at WT 4th Annual Gala Awards

ABIDJAN, Cote d’Ivoire (Dec. 4, 2017) – Bianca Walkden of Great Britain was named Best Female Athlete of the year and Dae-hoon Lee was named Best Male Athlete of the Year as World Taekwondo honored the outstanding personalities, teams and countries of 2017 at its fourth annual Gala Awards in Abidjan’s Radisson Blue Hotel.

The evening offered the game’s players, coaches and referees the chance to let their hair down in black tie and evening wear against a ritzy, five-star backdrop. The dining hall was decked out in West African style, with brightly colored hangings and table wear – all rocking to the sound of upbeat tribal techno and traditional music.

In 2017, Walkden defended her World Championship title and won all four of the year’s Grand Prix tournaments – a historic achievement, as this is the first time this has happened, ever. “I want to ‘thank you’ to everyone, I am still shocked, I am so pleased,” she said on the podium. She added: “I’ve got one more left: I am going to win the Grand Slam – then I am going to take a break!:” Her reference was to the upcoming Grand Slam Champions Series, a new, made-for-TV competition format set to make its debut in Wuxi, China, at year’s end.

Lee’s receipt of the Best Male Athlete of the Year award was an extraordinary achievement: The soft-spoken, hard-kicking Korean has won the honor three out of the four times it has been awarded in total; no other athlete has won it more than once. In 2017, Lee won the World Championships, and three out of four Grand Prix titles – the only one he did not win, he did not attend. Clearly struggling with his English, Lee persevered to say, “I have always thought that there is something for me to learn from watching the people here; I have learned many things from watching you guys.”

The Coach of the Year award was won by Serbia’s Dragan Jovic, whose remarkable “Galeb” (“Seagull”) dojang in Belgrade has produced a wining crop of female players including two Olympic medalists and two world champions. “I am very happy, of course, but I could not have done it without my ladies!” he said, before wishing all a merry Christmas.

The Best Kick of the Year award was won – for the second time – by Moldovan Aaron Cook, for his spinning heel kick to the head of Russia’s Anton Kotkov at the Moscow Grand Prix Series 1. “I don’t know what to say, I am just here to support Bianca,” he said’ Cook and Walkden have been romantically linked for a decade. “It is a great honor to get this award a second time.”

Best Member National Association of the Year was won by Korea, which had successfully hosted the biggest world championships in history.

The Female Referee of the Year award was won by Julie Dib of Lebanon. “It is wonderful to be surrounded by the people I call my ‘Taekwondo Family.’” she said. “You are the best!”
The Male Referee of the Year award was won by Belgium’s Abdelkhalek Chbibi. “I am not alone in deserving this – it is with my colleagues, we always try to do a good job,” he said.

World Taekwondo Africa was named Best Continental Union of the Year. Africa enjoyed its greatest-ever outing at the Rio Olympics in 2016, and this year, has hosted a Grand Prix (in Rabat, Morocco) and a Grand Prix Final (in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire) in 2017 – both firsts for the continent.

Best National Team of the Year – ie the team which has taken home the most medals in the World Championships and Grand Prix Series of 2017 – was won by Korea, followed by Russia in second place and Great Britain in third.

Earlier in the evening, following a performance by a local dance troupe, WT President Chungwon Choue had recounted the achievements of the year, focusing on the success of the 2017 World Championships in Muju, Korea; the rising role of Africa in the sport; and the charitable efforts of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation.

The President of the Cote d’Ivorian Taekwondo Federation, Daniel Cheick Bamba, also spoke, thanking WT for giving his nation the chance to host the prestigious Grand Prix Final, Gala Awards and World Team Championships. “To see you all here at this ceremony, my heart is full of happiness,” he told the crowd.

The ceremony was MCed by Pascal Gentil, the chair of the WT Athletes Committee.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the evening really got underway as a range of singers took to the stage, dinner was served, and the wine flowed.

Next year’s Grand Prix Final and Gala Awards take place in UAE.

태권도 월드스타 이대훈이 세계태권도연맹이 수상하는 ‘올해의 남자 선수’와 영국의 비앙카 워크던이 ‘올해의 여자 선수’에 선정됐다.

이대훈과 비앙카는 4일(현지시간) 코트디부아르 아비장 래디슨호텔에서 열린 ‘2017 세계태권도연맹(WT) 갈라어워즈’에서 올해의 남녀 선수로 뽑혔다.

이대훈(한국가스공사)은 2017 무주 세계태권도선수권대회에서 우승하면서 통산 3회 우승 대기록을 세웠다.

또 전국체전 참가 때문에 불참한 런던 그랑프리 시리즈 3차전을 제외하고, 출전한 그랑프리 시리즈를 모두 휩쓸었다. 또 4일(현지시각) 아비장에서 막을 내린 그랑프리 파이널에서 우승하면서 사상 첫 3연패를 달성했다. 

이미 두 차례 수상 경험이 있는 이대훈은 큰 기대 없이 시상식에 참석했고, 수상자로 자신을 호명하자 깜짝 놀란 표정으로 시상대에 올랐다. 부족한 영어 실력에도 수상 소감을 또박 또박 영어로 밝히고, 불어로 인사까지 해 참석자들로부터 큰 환호를 받았다.  

이대훈은 “훌륭한 선수들이 많은데 내가 받아 큰 영광이다. 모든 선수들에게 감사하다고 얘기하고 싶다”면서 “세 번째 수상이지만, 매번 수상할 때마다 영광이었다. 이런 큰 자리에 설수 있어 기쁘다. 영어로 소감을 밝힐 수 있는 것 또한 내게는 너무나 소중하고 특별한 경험이다”고 소감을 밝혔다. 

올해 갈라어워즈 장소가 코트디부아르라는 점에서 홈 이점을 안고 시세 살라가 선정될 것으로 보였으나, 투표에 참가한 선수와 코치, 심판은 올 한해 경기장에서 최고의 실력을 발휘한 이대훈을 택했다. 

비앙카는 올해 2017 WT 프레지던트컵 유럽대회 우승을 시작으로 ‘2017 무주 세계태권도선수권대회’ 2연패, 2017 월드 태권도 그랑프리 시리즈 1차전(러시아 모스크바)과 2차전(모로코 라바트), 3차전(영국 런던)에 이어 상위 16위까지 초청하는 파이널까지 모두 우승했다. 그랑프리 한 시즌 전관왕은 비앙카가 사상 최초다. 

비앙카는 “너무 행복하다. 모든 이들에게 감사하다. 특히 남자친구인 몰도바의 태권도선수 아론쿡과 영국 팀에게 이 영광을 바친다. 곧 있을 그랜드슬램에서 좋은 성적이 있길 바란다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

최우수 선수 후보는 올해 열린 무주 세계선수권과 그랑프리 파이널을 포함해 그랑프리 시리즈에서 2회 이상 우승한 남녀 선수를 대상으로 갈라어워즈 현장에서 그랑프리 출전 남녀 선수와 코치, 심판이 투표로 선택했다.

남자 후보로는 무주 세계선수권과 그랑프리 1차, 2차, 출전한 대회를 모두 휩쓴 한국의 경량급 간판 김태훈(수원시청, -58KG급)과 이대훈(한국가스공사), 그랑프리 2차, 3차 그리고 파이널에서 3연승을 차지한 코트디부아르 세이크 시세 살라, 무주 세계선수권과 파이널에서 우승한 러시아 라빈 블라디슬라브(+80kg급) 등 4명이 후보에 올랐다.

여자는 무주 세계선수권대회와 그랑프리 1~3차 전 시리즈와 파이널까지 모두 휩쓴 비앙카 워크던(영국, +67KG급)과 런던 3차그랑프리와 파이널을 우승한 제이드 존스(영국, -57KG급), 모스크바 1차 그랑프리와 3차 런던 그랑프리, 파이널에서 3회 우승한 태국의 패니팍 웅파타나키트, 세계선수권과 2차 그랑프리에서 우승한 터키 타타르 누르, 세계선수권과 1차 모스크바에서 우승한 코트디부아르 루스 그바그비와 이아름 등 6명이 후보에 올랐다.     

올해의 남자 심판상은 아브델카렉 츠비비(Abdelkhalek CHBIBI, 벨지움), 올해의 여자 심판은 줄리 디브(Julie DIB, 레바논)가 각각 선정됐다.

올해의 코치상은 세르비아의 드라간 조비치 코치가 수상했다. 드라간은 소수의 선수를 지도해 2012 런던 올림픽에서 +67kg급 밀라차 만디치를 금메달, 2016 리우 올림픽에서는 -49㎏급 티야나 보그다노비치 은메달을 배출한 명장이다. 올해는 잠시 슬럼프를 겪은 만디치를 무주 세계선수권대회에서 우승하는데 결정적인 역할을 했다.

올해의 국가협회상은 대한민국이 선정됐다. 선정 이유로는 역대 최다 국가와 선수단이 참가한 ‘2017 무주 세계태권도선수권대회’를 성공적으로 개최하고, 올 한해 최고 성적을 낸 것 때문이라고 WT 기술위원회가 설명했다. 

신설된 ‘올해의 최우수 대표팀’에서도 한국이 1위에 올랐다. 무주 세계선수권과 그랑프리 전 시리즈에서 남녀 통산 금,은,동메달 획득수로 점수를 매기는데 한국이 압도적인 성적으로 최고상을 받았다. 러시아와 영국이 그 뒤를 이어 2위와 3위에 올랐다.

2017 베스트 킥은 몰도바 아론 쿡이 받았다. 2017 모스크바 월드그랑프리 결승전 장면이 최고의 발차기로 선택됐다. 아론 쿡은 2015년 신설된 베스트킥 첫 수상자이기도 하다. 

올해 신설된 ‘올해의 대륙연맹’은 아프리카태권도연맹(총재 아흐마드 훌리)이 받았다.

한편, 5일부터 6일 양일간에는 그랑프리파이널이 열린 팔레드스포츠(Palais des Sports)경기장에서 ‘2017 월드태권도팀선수권’이 열린다.

남자팀은 중국, 한국, 이란, 니제르, 러시아, 모로코, 대만, 코트디부아르 등 8개팀, 여자팀은 중국, 한국, 모로코, 코트디부아르, 미국 등 5개팀이 참가한다.

혼성팀은 멕시코, 러시아, 한국, 모로코, 중국이 참가해 남녀 혼성팀 경기도 치뤄진다.
