GENEVA, Switzerland (April, 12) – World Taekwondo (WT) and the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) today showcased the power of taekwondo to promote peace during a joint-demonstration at the United Nations (UN) Office in Geneva.
The joint-demonstration was the fourth demonstration held over the last week to mark the 25th anniversary of taekwondo being included on the Olympic Programme and to celebrate the growing collaboration between the two federations.
The UN office in Geneva (UNOG), a symbol of unity, collaboration and international peace, provided the perfect setting for the joint-demonstration, which sent out a strong message about taekwondo’s power to teach values that transcend sport.
UN Geneva Director General Michael Moller, ambassadors, diplomatic corps, board members and staff from international organizations, including the UN, watched with awe as 28 delegates from WT and 23 delegates from ITF, showcased the skill, excitement and drama of taekwondo.
The athletes performed gravity-defying kicks, spectacular board-breaking, self-defense and graceful Poomsae skills, astonishing each member of the audience.
This is the second time WT has visited the UN offices in Geneva, after an initial visit in 2016 to discuss humanitarian and peace building initiatives. The WT Demonstration Team had the honor of performing a demonstration during that visit.

Prior to the joint performance, Director General Michael Moller said: “The performance we are now going to see is a testament to the power of sport in bringing peace and reconciliation, friendship and harmony. We are proactively looking for ways to strengthen our cooperation with international sport federations. We are doing this because we see important synergies between the work of sport federations and international organizations. Sport is an important enabler to reach out to young people worldwide and to disseminate the values enshrined in the UN Charter

of the same values. It was at the UN headquarters in New York in 2015 that we first announced the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF). Since then, we have supported a number of humanitarian and peace building initiatives all around the world. “Today was a symbolic moment for our sport as it was the first time that WT and ITF have performed together at the UN. This sent out a strong message of collaboration and peace. We have different rules, use different equipment and some of the techniques used by our athletes have diverged. But as today’s event has proven, we are moving towards unity. I would like to thank UN Geneva Director General Michael Moller, who has hosted us here today.”

WT and the UN have enjoyed a close relationship for many years, particularly in providing opportunities for refugees. Establishing the THF to empower refugees is a critical part of these efforts. At the THF’s Humanitarian Taekwondo Center, they not only teach young people taekwondo but also how to live as global citizens. WT has encouraged other International Federations to join them in providing opportunities for young people to practice sport in refugee camps around the world.

ose to unify taekwondo. Taekwondo is the legacy and pride of mankind as it promotes people’s health and aspires for peace and justice. I hope this historic event will be the opportunity to unify taekwondo.”
This event ensures the continued development of taekwondo, reinforcing the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games legacy of peace.
Prior to this event at UNOG, a WT and ITF joint demonstrations took place at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) under the theme of “Taekwondo for Peace.”
Zhao Houlin, ITU Secretary General said: “The ancient taekwondo teaches respect, commitment, responsibility and perseverance. These values lie at the heart of the United Nations Charter. Like sport, information and communication technology is an important tool for development and for peace. Both promote understanding and cooperation, and we need this now more than ever.” The joint WT-ITF demonstrations of the past week began on 5 April in Vienna, Austria where the ITF headquarters is located. The next demonstration took place on 11 April at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne in cooperation with IOC President Thomas Bach before today’s demonstrations capped off the celebrations.
세계태권도연맹, 국제태권도연맹 유럽 합동 공연 UN 제네바 본부서 성황리에 막 내려
세계태권도연맹(WT, 총재 조정원)과 국제태권도연맹(ITF, 총재 리용선) 시범단은 현지시간 12일 오후 1시 30분에 스위스 유엔제네바본부(UnitedNationsOfficeatGeneva, UNOG) 어셈블리 홀(Assembly Hall)에서 합동 시범을 펼쳤다. 지난 5일 오스트리아 빈과 11일 로잔 올림픽박물관에 이어 대미를 장식하는 마지막 유럽 합동 공연이다.
ITF 시범단의 시범을 시작으로 약 한 시간가량 펼쳐진 이번 합동 시범에는 마이클 뮬러(Michael Moller) UNOC 국장, 백지아 주제네바대표부 한국대사, 한태성 주제네바본부 북한대사를 비롯하여 제네바에 주재하는 각국 대사, 외교단, 국제기구 임원과 유엔 직원이 참석했다.
ITF 시범단의 공연은 실내를 가르는 쩌렁쩌렁한 기합소리와 함께 위력 격파, 실제를 방불케하는 호신술 등을 펼쳐 보여 관객들의 탄성을 자아냈다.
WT 시범단은 지난 공연과 마찬가지로 빠른 템포의 현대적 음악에 맞춰 고난도 발차기 기술과 품새 시범에 댄스 안무를 접목해 화려한 볼거리를 제공했다.
마지막은 두 연맹의 합동공연으로 무대를 마무리하고, 최동성 WT 시범단 감독과 송남호 ITF 감독이 손을 맞잡고 내빈들에게 인사하자 객석에서는 환호가 쏟아졌다.
공연에 앞서 환영사를 통해 마이클 뮬러(Michael Moller) UNOG 국장은 “2016년 세계태권도연맹 시범단의 공연에 이어 두 번째 공연을 보게 되어 기쁘다. 특히 오늘 공연은 평화와 화해, 우정과 화합을 가능하게 하는 스포츠의 힘을 느낄 수 있는 동시에 지난 평창 동계올림픽의 감동을 재현하게 될 것이다”며 “오늘날 태권도는 단순한 무도나 올림픽 종목을 넘어 전 세계에서 사랑받으며 예의, 진실성, 인내, 불굴의 의지를 표방하고 보다 평화로운 세상의 구현을 위해 노력한다는 점에서 UN 헌장의 정신을 떠올리게 한다. UN과 스포츠기구 간의 지속적인 협력을 통한 시너지 창출을 기대한다”고 소감을 전했다.
조정원 WT 총재는 “세계태권도연맹과 UN은 여러 면에서 추구하는 가치를 공유하고 있다. 역사적인 합동 공연을 UNOG에서 개최하게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각”하며 “지금은 두 기구가 각자의 경기 규칙을 가지고 다른 방식으로 운영하고 있지만 오늘의 합동 시범이 보여주듯 결국은 하나의 태권도로 가게 될 것이다”라고 말했다.
리용선 ITF 총재는 “지금까지 이미 WT와 ITF는 하나된 태권도를 꿈꾸며 여러 차례 합동시범 공연을 보여 왔다”라며 “오늘과 같은 역사적인 시범 공연이 모든 태권도인들이 염원하는 하나된 태권도를 만들기 위한 계기가 되기를 바란다”라고 인사말을 밝혔다.
WT 시범단은 2015년 9월 뉴욕 UN 본부와 2016년 5월 이곳 UNOG에서 각각 태권도 시범을 펼친 바 있지만 ITF 시범단과 함께 이곳에서 합동 시범을 펼친건 이번이 처음이다.
한편 UNOG 공연이 열리기 앞서 WT, ITF 시범단은 제네바에서 개최된 세계정보사회정상회의(World Summit on the Information Society, WSIS)포럼 초청으로 “Taekwondo for Peace”라는 주제 하에 국제통신연맹(Internatoinal Telecommunication Union, ITU)에서 시범공연을 열었다.
ITU의 자우 훌린(Zhao Houlin) 사무총장은 “존중, 헌신, 책임과 인내를 추구하는 태권도의 정신과 가치는 UN 헌장과 일치한다.”면서 정보통신 또한 태권도와 더불어 인류평화에 기여하는 수단으로 발전하기를 희망한다고 시범단을 환영했다.
태권도의 올림픽 정식종목 채택 25주년 기념하여 추진된 이번 합동 유럽 공연은 지난해 10월 WT 시범단과 함께 평양을 방문한 조정원 총재가 리용선 ITF 총재에게 제안하면서 이루어졌고 IOC위원장의 적극적의 후원 속에 행사 일정이 조율됐다.
이번 유럽 순회 합동 공연은 지난 5일 국제태권도연맹 본부가 위치한 오스트리아 빈에서의 합동 공연을 시작으로 IOC 토마스 바흐 위원장이 공동주최한 11일 로잔 올림픽 박물관 공연, 제네바 국제통신연맹 공연 그리고 제네바 UNOG 공연을 마지막으로 네 번에 걸쳐 성공적인 대단원의 막을 내렸다.
