Korea Clinches 3 Gold Medals, China 2 Golds on 2nd Day of 9th WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships

 

AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico (October 31, 2014) Korea took home three gold medals and two bronze medals, followed by China with two gold medals on the second day of the 9th WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico on Oct. 31, 2014.

Spain, the Philippines and Turkey won one gold medal each, while host Mexico grabbed four silver medals and two bronze medals. A total of 16 countries took at least one medal on the second day of competition.

In the male team cadet division, a trio of Chinese took home the gold medal with a score of 8.15 points, while the United States won the silver medal with 8.06 points. The bronze went to host Mexico and Spain.

In the female tem over 30 category, a trio of Koreans garnered 8.3 points for the gold medal. Host Mexico took the silver medal with 7.9 points, while the United States and Spain won the bronze medal each.

In the male individual under 40 category, Turkey's Mevlut Pekcan garnered 8.45 points to win the gold medal in the final round. The Philippines' Ernesto Guzman took 8.42 for the silver medal. Vietnam's Quoc Minh Nguyen and Korea's Jin-han Lee shared the bronze medal.

In the female individual under 40 division, Spain's Laura Kim Kim took 8.54 points for the gold medal, while Mexico's Nohemi Santamaria won 8.28 points for the silver. The bronze went to Korea's Eon-hwa Seong and Brazil's Manoela Pontual.

In the female individual under 60 division, Korea's Young-ae Seo won 8.15 points for the gold medal, the eighth at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. The silver went to Mexico with 8.09 points. Germany and Israel grabbed the bronze medal.

In the junior pair division, Korea garnered 8.49 points for the gold medal, while Mexico took the silver with 8.26 points. The bronze went to Chinese Taipei and Denmark.

In the freestyle male individual under 17 division, China's Xing Yuan won 7.680 points in the final round to earn his country the gold medal, while Vietnam's Minh Phuc Vo garnered 7.520 for the silver medal. The bronze went to Russia's Sergei Slepich and Australia's Lachlan Stewart, who took 7.420 and 7.340 points, respectively.

In the freestyle mixed team over 17 category, the Philippines earned 7.880 points for the gold medal and Turkey won the silver with 7.640 points. The United States and Mexico clinched the bronze medal.

In the female individual over 65 category, Denmark's Lis Borring earned 7.57 points for the gold medal, while the United States' Erica Linthorst won 7.24 points for the silver. Their records, however, will not be officially taken as there were less than four contestants in the division.

On the third day of the competition on Nov. 1, poomsae athletes will compete for top honors in nine divisions.
