Why Taekwondo Teachers Are Called ‘Master’
The meeting with the head of the national correction agency in Côte d'Ivoire of West Africa who have visited Muju Taekwondo-won in the summer of 2018, was so special to me. It was because he greeted me with Korean-style greetings in a polite attitude when I introduce myself as a master of Taekwondo 6th Dan. In the present Côte d'Ivoire, formerly known as Ivory Coast, where people traded ivory, the elephant horn, he met a Korean Taekwondo master and learned Taekwondo. This time he really wanted to meet the master once again who has taught him Taekwondo. After many twists and turns, a meeting with an elderly master of Kukkiwon was made. As he treated the head of state, he took a correct posture, and his face was full of excitement as if he had met a separated family. And he was so proud of him saying “this is my master”. His pride was not only passed on to everyone around him, but also imprinted upon them.
We do not call a Taekwondo trainer as a teacher. We use a special title called 'master'. A teacher means a person who teaches, but a teacher called master has one more special meaning. A master is the teacher who becomes the 'model'. In simple terms of Korean language, it is easy to understand this word ‘sa-beom(master)’ if you think that the Gyo-sa(teacher)'s "sa" and the Mo-beom(model)’s "bum" are combined. Taekwondo is not just a sport of teaching knowledge and information. In sports such as soccer, baseball, and basketball, trainers are called coaches. Coach means "one who leads and teaches." In the end, the coach plays the role of leading and teaching not only the skills of the sport but also the spirit to learn well. However, Taekwondo masters have more special meanings and roles than coaches. It is meant to present an example and a model as a role model leading a direction of practice.

If you ask children what their dreams are these days, they used to say that they have no dreams. If you ask them who they respect, then they are easy to say no one. That's why the number one desired job for young people who graduated from college is to be a government officer. It is sometimes painful to just look at people living without dreams and without admirable figures.
In the Korea national martial arts and official sport, Taekwondo, there is a master who instruct Taekwondo. So Taekwondo trainees learned not only skills of hands and feet but also direction and way of life through Taekwondo masters. Master was a model of Taekwondo practice and an example of Taekwondo spirit for Taekwondo trainees.
Before Taekwondo was adopted as an official Olympic sport, the dedication of Taekwondo masters was a major contributor to the globalization of Taekwondo. According to recent studies, it was the pioneering spirit and challenging spirit of Korean Taekwondo masters sent overseas that Taekwondo attracted sensational attention in the globalization of Taekwondo. In addition, there is a thesis that the popularization of Taekwondo in Africa was due to the effort and personal devotion of Korean Taekwondo masters. Foreign Taekwondo trainees have met Taekwondo of a small oriental country on the other side of the world. And they have tried to complete personality through Taekwondo training and dreamed of becoming an Olympic athlete. The first thing they could see was the spiritual world in their Taekwondo masters. It became the way of training and the direction of life for them. And Taekwondo became the key to becoming the official event of the Olympics, the sports festival of the world.
In today's Taekwondo, there was a remarkable development of technology and system. Although it is still lacking, the globalization of taekwondo is being done through various studies and policies. However, there is a doubt that the existence of 'Sa-beom(master)' in Taekwondo continues to fade away. Taekwondo, which lacks the mastership or master’s mindset, will easily lose its discrimination with other sports. We still call Taekwondo instructors as 'masters'. This is because Taekwondo masters are the ones who can present the way of Taekwondo practices and the model of right life.
I had also a Taekwondo master, and I always try to look back on myself today in order to instruct Taekwondo as a Taekwondo master. Even now, the voice of the head of Côte d'Ivoire correction agency, who was excited calling the Korea’s short old man as “my master” echoes in my memory.

2018年夏天在茂州跆拳道园见到来自西非科特迪瓦教育厅长时的印象非常深刻。知道我是跆拳道六段后非常正式的给我行了标准的韩国式敬礼。厅长刚开始学习跆拳道的时候还是在被叫成“象牙海岸”，象牙贸易仓绝的科特迪瓦时期，表示非常想见到当时教跆拳道的师范。几经挫折最终帮他实现了这个愿望，貌似离散家属相见脸上带着无比的期待和感动，不停的向别人介绍这就是我的教练。
我们把教跆拳道的人不叫“老师”，而是有专业称呼叫“师范”。老师指的是教师，但师范在教师的基础上还多了层涵义，就是要成为别人的模范。简单理解的话就是把教师的师和模范的范合在一起的新生称呼。
跆拳道不是仅教授技术的体育项目，足篮排项目中教师成为教练，教练意指教授和指导的人。也就是更好的得到技术方面的学习还教授精神教育的知识。跆拳道的师范除了这些还赋予一层更特殊的意义，那就是成为别人的模范、榜样，并提供训练的方向性。
现在问小朋友有没有梦想很多都会答没有，再问有没有敬重的人马上会回答没有。大学毕业生们第一就业意向是公务员不知道是不是因为这些因素。既没有梦想又没有敬重的人，有时看着他们就莫名觉得难受。
教授国技跆拳道是由师范来承担。所以很多修炼者通过练习跆拳道提升了身体技术，而且也通过师范教授跆拳道树立新的人生观，成为他们学习的榜样和模范。
跆拳道成为奥运会项目前，能在全世界获得如此之高的推广是跟走向世界的众多师范所付出的努力是分不开的。根据最近研究成果表示跆拳道能够在这么短时间内风靡全球是跟向全世界派遣众多师范密不可分的。而且能够在非洲推广普及跆拳道跟派遣师范们的努力和复出是分不开的。
通过学习东方武学跆拳道，通过跆拳道参加奥运会拿到成绩后衣锦还乡丰衣足食，让他们能够拥有这种向往是通过每个派遣的师范身上学习和认知到的。给了他们人生的目标，又成为努力练习的动力，也是能够参加奥运会的最好钥匙。
当今的跆拳道通过技术和制度上的发展得到很高的提升。虽然还需努力但跆拳道也在慢慢走向世界，完善其政策和研究成果。但有时总觉得跆拳道师范的形象是不是越来越变差了。
跆拳道中缺失了师范，会失去跟其他运动项目间的差异性。现在我们还是把教授跆拳道的人称之为“师范”，因为他能给学员提供技术同时还指明发展观。
我也有过跆拳道师范，而且也梦想着有朝一日能像他一样。总是会想起科特迪瓦教育厅长拽着东方老人，开着玩笑说这是我的师范的情景。

태권도 교사를 ‘사범’이라고 부르는 이유
2018년 여름 무주 태권도원을 찾은 서부 아프리카 코트디부아르의 교정청장과 만남은 너무 특별했다. 태권도 공인 6단이라고 밝힌 필자에게 정 자세를 취하며 깍듯하게 한국식 인사를 했기 때문이다. 우리에게는 코끼리 뿔인 상아를 무역했던 곳으로 알려진 옛 이름 ‘아이보리코스트’였던 현재의 코트디부아르에서 그는 태권도 사범을 만나 태권도를 배웠다고 했다. 그는 당시 자기에게 태권도를 가르쳐주었던 사범님을 꼭 만나고 싶어하였다.
우여곡절 끝에 국기원에 계신 연로하신 사범님과의 만남이 성사되었다. 국가 원수를 대하듯 바른 자세를 취하고, 이산 가족을 만난 듯 얼굴에는 흥분이 가득했다. 그리고 계속 이 분이 나의 사범님(Master)이라며 무척이나 자랑스러워했다. 그의 자긍심은 주위 모든 사람들에게도 전해졌을 뿐 아니라, 각인되기까지 했다.
우리는 태권도를 가르치는 선생님을 ‘교사’라고 부르지 않는다. ‘사범’이라고 별다른 호칭을 사용한다. 교사란 가르치는 선생님을 의미하지만, 사범은 여기에 특별한 의미가 하나 더 있다. 바로 ‘모범’이 되는 사람이라는 뜻이다. 쉽게 말해서, 교사의 ‘사’와 모범의 ‘범’을 합쳤다고 생각하면 이해하기 쉬울 것이다.
태권도는 단순한 지식과 정보를 가르치는 스포츠가 아니다. 축구, 야구, 농구 등의 스포츠에서는 교사를 ‘코치’라고 부른다. 코치(Coach)란 ‘지도하여 가르치는 사람’을 뜻한다. 결국 잘 배울 수 있도록 운동 경기의 기술뿐 아니라 정신도 지도해주는 역할을 코치가 하고 있다. 그러나 태권도의 사범은 코치보다 더 특별한 의미와 역할을 지니고 있다. 그것은 바로 모범, 모델, 본보기가 되는 역할과 수련의 방향성까지 제시한다는 의미를 갖고 있기 때문이다.
요즘 어린 아이들에게 꿈이 있냐고 물어보면 대부분 아이들이 꿈이 없다고 한다. 그러면 존경하는 사람은 누구냐고 물어보면, 없다는 말이 바로 튀어나오기가 일쑤다. 그래서인지 요즘 대학을 졸업한 청년들의 직업 1순위가 공무원인지도 모르겠다. 꿈도 없고 존경하는 인물도 없이 사는 모습은 그냥 바라만 보기가 때로는 고통스럽다.
우리나라의 스포츠인 국기 태권도에는 태권도를 가르치는 사범이 있다. 그래서 수련생들은 태권도 사범을 통해 발과 손기술 뿐 아니라 삶아가는 방향과 길까지 배웠다. 사범님은 태권도 수련생에게 태권도 수련의 모범과 모델이었고 태권도 정신의 본보기였다.
태권도가 정식 올림픽 종목으로 채택되기 전, 태권도의 세계화에 크게 기여한 요인도 바로 태권도 사범들의 헌신적인 노력 때문이었다. 최근 연구에 의하면, 태권도 세계화에 있어 태권도가 해외에서 선풍적인 관심을 끌게 된 것은 해외로 파견된 한국 태권도 사범들의 개척정신과 도전 정신이었다고 한다. 또한, 아프리카에 태권도가 보급되어 대중화를 이룬 것도 한국 태권도 사범들의 피나는 노력과 개인적인 헌신이었다는 논문이 있다. 지구 반대편에 있는 작은 동양의 나라의 태권도를 접하며 태권도를 통해 인격을 완성하고 올림픽 선수로서 국위선양까지 꿈꿀 수 있었던 외국 선수들이 가장 먼저 본 것은 태권도 사범님 안에 있는 정신 세계였다. 그것이 그들에게 수련의 길과 인생의 방향이 되었고, 태권도가 전세계인의 스포츠 대축제인 올림픽의 정식 종목이 될 수 있는 열쇠가 되었던 것이다.
오늘의 태권도에는 괄목할 만한 기술과 제도의 발전이 있었다. 부족하지만 태권도의 세계화도 다양한 연구와 정책을 통해 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 태권도에서 ‘사범’의 존재는 자꾸만 퇴색되어 가고 있지는 않은가 의심이 된다. ‘사범’이 빠진 태권도는 다른 스포츠와의 변별력을 쉽게 잃고 말 것이다. 우리는 지금도 태권도를 가르치는 선생님을 ‘사범님’이라고 부른다. 태권도를 통해 태권 수련의 길과 바른 인생의 모범을 제시해 줄 수 있는 존재이기 때문이다.
필자에게도 태권도 사범님이 계셨고, 또 태권도를 가르치며 그 사범님이 되고자 오늘도 자신을 돌아보고 있다. 지금도 작은 키의 연로한 동양의 작은 나라 노인을 흥분하며 ‘나의 사범님’이라고 부르며 흥분하던 코트디부아르 교정청장의 목소리가 기억 속에서 메아리 친다.
