“Devotion to the Country is the Mission of Taekwondo Instructors”

 Do you know what day is February 14?

It’s the 112th anniversary of heroic deed by Jung-geun Ahn(1879－1910) who served as chief of staff for army.

February 14 isn’t a Valentine’s Day. It’s the day of Jung-geun Ahn who raised the self-esteem of the people. On February 14, Japanese colonial court sentenced a death to Ahn for killing Ito Hirobumi at Harbin Station, Manchuria on October 26, 1909. In celebrating the112th anniversary of General Ahn’s heroic deed, I express my deep respect to Ahn for shouting out ‘Korea! pya!’ and spreading the spirit of Korea.    

I also express my sincere respect on General Ahn’s ideas about ‘On Peace in East Asia’ for practicing the peace of the eastern countries and the world. Out of my sincere respect, I’d like to introduce Ahn’s phrase for our martial artists.

First, let’s think about “Devotion to the Country is the Mission of Solider (爲國獻身 軍人本分)”. This phrase means that it is the duty of the soldiers to devote themselves to the country. As the New Year’s resolution for Year of the Ox, I recommend Taekwondo instructors to respect the desires of General Ahn and devote themselves to the country.   

Like how the scholars and man of virtues accomplish benevolence after their death, the Taekwondo instructors need to practice the love for the country in times when whole nation is suffering from COVID-19. Like the lyrics of national anthem, ‘Love the country even in touch times and pleasant times’, we must overcome this tough times with the love and devotion for the country.

Secondly, General Ahn wrote ‘Not reading one book a day leads to a thorn on the mouth(一日不讀書 口中生型棘)’. This means that one should build up knowledge and become cultured by studying and reading every day because not reading or studying leads to using violent languages.

General Ahn encouraged the national participation in this movement. Like the ancient sage’s saying of ‘Reading every day is the millenary treasure and seeking materials for 100 years is merely trivial’, all Taekwondo instructors, administrators association, Taekwondo coaches and directors, and all people related to Taekwondo need to read books in the Year of the Ox and build up competence in the rapidly changing world.

Seok-je Lee of World Taekwondo United News will be holding ‘Reading Campaign’ for all Taekwondo schools by utilizing a program called, ‘A Giant Reading Books’, a voucher system of Ministry of SMEs and Startups. 

The project aims to train the body through Taekwondo and become cultured through reading. For Taekwondo schools, I’m confident that this project will get favorable reactions from parents.

The patriotism of the national hero, Jung-geun Ahn, and valuable teachings such as “Don’t care about the home. Fight manly until the end.” and “You are sentenced for doing the right thing. Son, die honorably for the country.” by Ahn’s mother, Maria Joe, give deep impression and lessons for the people living in the contemporary society.

2월 14일이 무슨 날입니까?

대한의군 참모중장 안중근 장군(1879－1910)의거 112주년입니다.

밸런타인데이 아닙니다.

우리 민족의 자존을 세운 '안중근의 날'입니다.

1909년 10월 26일 만주 하얼빈역에서 이토 히로부미를 사살하여 왜국(倭國)의 법정인 관동법원에서 사형 선고를 받은 날입니다.

안 장군 의거 112주년을 맞이하여 의사(義士)께서 꼬레아 우라(대한민국 만세,Korea! pya!)를 외치며 대한국인의 기상을 온 세계에 알리심을 존경합니다. 또한 장군께서 주창하신 동양(東洋)과 세계평화 실천을 위한 동양평화론(東洋平和論)의 구상에 머리 숙여 경의를 표합니다.

안 장군의 대표적인 유묵(遺墨)으로 우리 무도인 들에게 귀감이 되는 글귀를 소개하고자 합니다. 먼저  '위국헌신 군인본분'(爲國獻身軍人本分)인 8글자를 생각해 봅니다. 이는 '나라를 위해 몸 바침이 군인의 본분이다.'라는 뜻이지요.

따라서 신축년 새해의 다짐으로 국기(國技) 태권도를 국내와 세계 속으로 보급하고 계시는 사범님들께 안중근 장군의 유지를 받들어’위국헌신 사범본분(爲國獻身師範本分)’으로 삼으시길 권해봅니다.

즉, 선비와 어진 사람은 몸을 죽여서 인(仁)을 이루듯이 코로나 등으로 온 국민이 어려운 이때 나라 사랑의 실천을 국기 태권도 사범의 본분으로 삼자는 것입니다. 애국가에도 나오듯이 괴로우나 즐거우나 나라사랑 하세를 뼛속 깊이 새기며 이 어려운 난국을 이겨 나가야 하겠습니다.

두 번째로 안 의사는 ‘일일부독서 구중생형극’(一日不讀書口中生型棘)으로 '하루라도 책을 읽지 않으면 입안에 가시가 돋친다'는 유묵을 남기셨습니다.

이는 '책 읽고 공부하지 않으면 거친 말을 하게 되니, 매일 공부와 독서에 정진해 지식과 교양을 쌓으라'는 내용입니다.

안 의사는 이 실천 운동에 국민(國民) 참여를 독려했습니다. 태권도를 지도하는 사범들이나 협회를 운영하는 행정가들, 선수들을 지도하는 코치 감독들, 나아가 태권도와 관계된 모든 분들은 ‘하루의 독서는 천 년의 보배요, 백 년 간 물질만 탐내는 것은 티끌과 같다’라는 선현들의 말씀과 같이 신축년에는 독서를 통해 하루가 다르게 변화하는 시대에 자신의 역량을 키워나가야 하겠습니다.

마침 세계태권도 연합뉴스(WTU-news)의 이석제 대표는 중소벤처기업부 바우처 제도(Voucher System)인 ‘책 읽는 거인’이란 프로그램을 활용하여 전국의 태권도장에 ‘책 읽기 운동’을 전개한다고 합니다. 태권을 통한 신체단련과 독서를 통해 교양을 높이고자 하는 이 프로젝트는 국기(國技)를 수련하는 태권도장에 학부모들로부터 칭송을 크게 받을 것으로 확신합니다.

‘오노균 태권도 TV’ 제39강은 민족의 영웅 안중근 장군의 애국정신을 흠모(欽慕)하면서 “집안일은 생각하지 말고 최후까지 남자답게 싸우라”라는 천금 같은 가르침과 “옳은 일을 하고 받는 형(形)이니 아들아 나라를 위해 떳떳하게 죽으라”라고 당부한 의로운 어머니 조마리아 여사님의 담대한 가르침은 현시대를 살아가는 우리에게 큰 울림과 교훈(敎訓)으로 다가오는 오늘입니다.
