“In Year of the Ox, Martial Arts Village Selects Martial Arts Mater”

Greetings to all Taekwondo instructors in Korea and foreign countries trying their best to flourish Taekwondo and enhance national prestige.  

Today, I’d like to make a new year’s greeting and share good words.

Our ancestors regarded the period from the New Year’s Day to January 15th as the sacred period and started the New Year by flying a kite to prevent misfortunes. 

Especially, Taekwondo families around the world are going through tough times since the last year due to COVID-19. To wish for peace success this year, I’d like to fly a kite just like how ancestors used to fly a kite at the beginning of the year.

New Year’s Day is one of the three national holidays of Korea and New Year’s Day holds a meaning of leaving the old year and welcoming the first morning of the year. While there have been changes in the name of New Year’s Day such as Sinjung, Gujung, Folklore Day, New Year’s Day is still handed down as the great national cultural heritage. While January 1st of the solar calendar was called ‘Sinjung’ in the past, the term, Sinjung,  disappeared since 1999. In response, the traditional New Year of Korea is now called New Year’s Day (or Lunar New Year’s Day) and New Year’s Day isn’t called Gujung or Sinjung anymore.

The records about New Year’s Day are found since the Three Kingdoms Period. During the Japanese colonial period, people were forced to only celebrate January 1st instead of Lunar New Year’s Day. Still, it wasn’t really effective thanks to the national cultures and traditions.

Ancestors regarded snow on the last day of the year as a prolific year. There is also a traditional custom where people lighted up the house and stayed up all night because sleeping on the last day of the year makes the eyebrows white.

On the morning of the New Year’s Day, ancestors dressed up in new clothes, enshrined the ancestral tablets on a shrine or living room, held an ancestral rite with sliced rice cake soup, and ate food and drink together. The ancestors also visited the elder members of the family, ate sliced rice cake soup for the meal, and visited the ancestral graves. In addition, ancestors visited elder neighbors or friends and shared good words. This led to a good custom of serving food and drink for the people who visited during the New Year’s Day.

On the third day of the New Year’s Day, rural and mountain villages held a shamanistic ritual, prayed to village gods, and visited around every house to play instrumental music of peasants and perform Jisinbapgi. The shamanistic ritual and Jisinbapgi wished for the community’s peace and prolific harvest. It’s really sad that such beautiful traditions are disappearing along the changes of time.

In 1960s, youths in Hyeondo, a rural village in Cheongju, Chungcheong-do, learned Taekwondo in groups and this lead to opening Farming Village Personality School. Then, in celebrating the Year of Ox in 2021, the school newly opens as “Hyeondo Martial Arts Village”. Hyeondo Martial Arts Village is close to Daecheong Dam, Cheongnamdae Presidential Villa, Daejeon, and Sejong and it is easily accessible to cultural resources. Hyeondo Martial Arts Village also has Hanok house, training center, camping village, and healing road together with IMAO office and cultural centers such as Hasimdang.

For the first commemorative project, Hyeondo Martial Arts Village will be holding “1st International Open Competition” on April 11, the “102th anniversary of establishment of the provisional government”. Also, for the IMAO’s project, Hyeondo Martial Arts Village will be selecting the ‘Master’ of martial arts. The one selected as the master will be having the honor of entering the Hyeondo Martial Arts Village’s Hall of Fame. This will be broadcasted around the world in real-time through the YouTube channel.   

In celebrating the New Year’s Day and the Year of White Ox, I sincerely hope for the year full of sacred energy, fortunes, and good events. From old times, ox has been symbolizing power and honesty with patient and peaceful image. Happy New Year and I hope all goes well for this New Year. Thank you.

국내와 해외에서 우리의 무예 태권도의 번영과 국위의 선양을 위해 늘 함께 하시는 사범님 여러분 안녕 하십니까?

오늘은 어르신들께 세배도 드리고 서로간에 덕담을 나누는 설 인사를 드립니다

우리조상들은 정월초하루인 설을 시작으로 정월 보름까지를 신성이 여겨 액막이연을 날리는 등 한 해를 시작 했습니다.

특히 지난해에 이어 코로나19로 고통 받고 있는 전세계태권도 가족들의 안녕을 기원하는 마음으로 조상들이 옛부터 정초 놀이로 즐겨왔던 액막이연이라도 날려 올해의 평안과 건승을 기원해 볼까 합니다.

설날은 우리 민족이 묵은 해를 보내고 새해 첫 아침을 여는 우리나라 3대 명절 입니다. 우리의 설날은 그 동안 신정,구정, 민속의 날 등 우여곡절은 있었지만 위대한 민족문화유산으로 이어졌습니다. 매년 양력 1월 1일을 ‘신정’이라 했으나 1999년부터는  ‘신정’ 이라는 표현은 사라지고 1월 1일이라 쓰고 있습니다. 우리한민족의 정통적 새해인 ‘설’은 음력 정월 초하루가 된 것이고 ‘설날’ 이라 합니다. 이제 구정 신정이라는 용어는 완전히 사라진 것입니다.

우리나라에서 설에 관련한 기록은 삼국시대부터 찾아 볼 수 있고, 일제 강점기에 양력을 기준으로 삼으면서 강제적으로 쇠지 못하게 하였으나 민족의 문화와 전통에 의해 별 실효가 없었습니다.

섣달 그믐날 밤에 눈이 오면 풍년이 든다고 했고, 그믐날 밤에 자면 눈썹이 희어 진다고 하여 밤을 세우는데, 이를 수세(守歲)하는 아련한 세시풍습도 있었습니다.

설날 아침에는 설비음(새옷)으로 차려 입고, 사당이나 대청에서 조상의 신주를 내어 모시고 떡국으로 설 차례를 지낸 다음에 음복을 함께 하고.... 집안 어른께 세배를 올리고 떡국으로 식사를 한 다음 성묘를 했지요. 또한 이웃의 어른들께나 친구끼리도 서로 집으로 찾아 가서 세배를 하고 덕담(德談)을 나누었습니다. 세배를 하러 오는 사람들을 위해 세찬(歲饌)과 세주(歲酒)를 접대하는 등 아름다운 미풍으로 이어 졌습니다.

설을 지내고 3일째 되는 날에 농산촌에서는 마을고사, 또는 동제 등을 지내고, 집집마다 찾아 다니며 농악을 치고  ‘지신밟기’를 하였는데요...마을고사와 지신밟기는 새해를 맞아 공동의 평안과 풍년농사를 기원 등의 의미를 갖고 있었는데 이러한 아름다운 전통이 세대의 변화 속에 소멸되고 있어 매우 안타까운 현실입니다..

이에 60년대 충청도 청주의 시골마을인 현도(賢都)에서 동네 청년들이 집단으로 태권도를 배웠는데 이를 스토리텔링으로 10여년전부터 농촌인성학교를 운영해 왔습니다. 이를 2021년 신축년 설날을 맞이 하여 “현도 무예촌”으로 출범 합니다. 현도 무예촌은 대청댐, 청남대, 대전시, 세종시와 인접하여 문화자원과 접근성이 용이하고, 한옥집,수련원,캠핑촌, 치유힐링길 등이 마련 되어 있습니다. 국제무예올림피아드(IMAO)사무국과 하심당(下心堂)등 문화원도 함께 하고 있습니다.

온라인 ‘제1회 무예촌장배 국제오픈대회’를 4월11일 “대한민국 임시정부 수립 102주년” 기념일에 맞추어 개최 하겠습니다. 이와 함께 법인 IMAO(이미오) 고유사업으로 최고의 명예인 ‘명인(名人)’을 선발 하겠습니다.명인으로 선발되면 무예촌 명예의 전당에 헌액(獻額)되는 영광을 차지 합니다. 이는 유튜브 채널을 통해 실시간 전세계로 생중계할 예정입니다.

설날을 맞이하여 신축년 흰 소띠의 해에 신성한 기운으로 복이 되고 좋은 일이 넘쳐나는 상서로운 일들이 물씬 일어나길 축원 합니다. 옛날부터 소는 힘과 우직함의 상징으로 참고 인내심이 큰 유유자적하는 평화로운 이미지를 갖고 있지요. 지구촌 태권도가족 여러분 새해 복 많이 받으시고 하시는 일 만사형통을 축원 합니다.
