World Taekwondo today inducted its first six inductees into the inaugural World Taekwondo Hall of Fame 2022 during its General Assembly in Sofia.  

The official ceremony was one of the key items on the General Assembly agenda which also included the reveal of World Taekwondo’s golden jubilee logo and theme: Peace in Mind, Taekwondo at Heart”. The golden jubilee will be celebrated next year.

During the General Assembly there were also a number of important reports on subjects including the MNA survey which will be the foundation for the MNA ranking starting next year, Global Membership System, Virtual Taekwondo which will be showcased at the Commonwealth Esports Championships in Birmingham this week, the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) and cooperation with Kukkiwon.

The first inductees revealed are: 

• Lifetime Contribution Award: The late Un-yong Kim (Korea) 

• Founder of World Taekwondo and former President. Recognised for his leadership in developing Taekwondo’s role with the IOC and securing Olympic recognition for the sport.

  Lifetime Contribution Award: The late Juan Antonio Samaranch (Spain) 

• Former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch played a significant role in gaining Taekwondo’s recognition as an Olympic sport. Taekwondo’s position today would not have been possible without his strong support and his term as IOC President coincided with the globalisation of Taekwondo.  

• Official Category: Dai-soon Lee (Korea) 

• Recognised for his devotion to Taekwondo and his contribution as a World Taekwondo vice president and to World Taekwondo Asia. He also served as a leader of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation and developed relations with the government of Korea in the promotion of Taekwondo as a global sport 

• Athlete Category: Kook-hyun Jung (Korea) 

• Four-time World Champion honoured for winning consecutive World Championships and helping to raise standards within the sport when Taekwondo was not yet an Olympic sport. After retiring as an athlete, he continued his career as a professor of Taekwondo to train younger athletes and then became a sports administrator serving on the World Taekwondo Council

  Athlete Category: Zhong Chen (China) 

• Recognised for being the first female athlete to have won consecutive Olympic gold medals at both Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, she also won gold at Beijing 2007 World Taekwondo Championships having previously won bronze at the 2003 Garmisch-Partenkirchen World Taekwondo Championships

• The World Taekwondo Council approved Fouly’s posthumous induction in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of Taekwondo in Africa and around the world. In addition, his position as a World Taekwondo Vice-President, Foulyhad led Taekwondo Africa which soared to prominence at Rio 2016 with African athletes walking away with a large Olympic medal haul.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said: 

“I am very happy to see so many members of our World Taekwondo family here in Sofia and also thank those who joined us online. I treasure the unity and friendship that we have, and our passion to instill good governance throughout our sport and organisation.  

“I am especially proud that we inaugurated the first class of the World Taekwondo Hall of Fame Throughout World Taekwondo’s illustrious history, there have been many, many individuals that have helped shape our sport and organisation. Today we have honoured some of these giants of Taekwondo who have laid the foundations for us to reach new heights.”  

The World Taekwondo Hall of Fame was created by the World Taekwondo Council at its meeting in Manchester, UK in May 2019 with the aim of recognising those who have made an extraordinary contribution to Taekwondo as an Olympic sport during their careers. 

The next General Assembly will take play on May 28, 2023 in Baku.

Tomorrow, the World Taekwondo Junior Championships will get underway in Sofia.  

세계태권도연맹(WT, 총재 조정원)은 1일(현지시각) 불가리아 소피아에서 회원국 대표단이 참가하는 대면 총회를 열고 초대 ‘명예의 전당’ 헌액식을 개최했다.

2019년 맨체스터 총회 이후 코로나19 감염증으로 온라인으로만 열리다가 현장에서 3년 만에 다시 열린 이번 총회는 90개국에서 200여명의 대표단이 참석했다.

명예의 전당은 태권도 경기 발전과 특히 올림픽 태권도 발전에 기여가 특별한 선수와 전현직 임원을 대상으로 선정했다. 선정 부문은 선수, 임원, 평생공로 등 세 부문이다. 

세계 태권도를 빛내게 한 분야별 주역을 평생 기억할 수 있도록 ‘WT 명예의 전당’을 신설했다. 초대 명예의 전당 헌액자는 2020년 6월 <명예의 전당 심사위원회>에서 추천한 후보자를 WT 집행위원회가 최종 승인했다. 

‘평생 공로부문’은 태권도를 올림픽 종목으로 도입하는데 기여가 가장 큰 故 김운용 전 총재와 故 후안 안토니오 사마란치 전 IOC 위원장이 선정되었다.

故 김운용 전 총재는 1971년 대한태권도협회장을 맡은 뒤 태권도 통합과 세계화를 위해 1972년 국기원과 1973년 세계태권도연맹을 차례로 설립해 태권도 발전을 견인했다. 특히 1994년 파리 IOC 총회에서 태권도가 2000 시드니 올림픽 정식종목으로 채택되는데 결정적인 기여를 한 것으로 인정받고 있다.

故 후안 안토니오 사마란치 전 IOC 위원장은 88 서울 올림픽에서부터 태권도를 올림픽 시범종목으로 채택하도록 하였으며, 1994년 태권도의 올림픽 정식종목 채택을 적극적으로 지지하였다. 

‘선수 부문’ 남자는 88 서울 올림픽 시범종목 금메달과 세계태권도선수권대회 첫 4연패로 세계기네스북에 등재된 바 있는 한국 태권도 역대 최고 선수로 꼽히는 정국현 WT 집행위원과 여자는 2000 시드니와 2004 아테네 올림픽 2연패를 달성한 중국의 첸종이 선정되었다.

‘임원 부문’은 이대순 전 WT 부총재 겸 아시아태권도연맹 회장과 故 아흐메드 풀리 아프리카태권도연맹 회장이 선정됐다. 아시아와 아프리카 태권도 발전에 많은 헌신을 한 공로로 초대 임원부문 수상자가 되었다.

이날 총회에서는 WT 창설 50주년 기념 로고와 슬로건이 발표되었다. 1973년 5월 28일 설립된 WT는 2023년이 설립 50주년이 되는 해이다. 50주년을 기념해 이 기간에 맞춰 아제르바이잔에서 차기 총회와 ‘아제르바이잔 2023 WT 세계태권도선수권대회’가 열릴 예정이다.

한편, 지난 7월 28일부터 31일까지 소피아에서 열린 세계유소녀태권도선수권대회에 이어 2일부터 7일까지 소피아 아르미치 아레나에서 세계태권도청소년선수권대회가 4년 만에 다시 재개된다.
