World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue today announced Jeongkang Seo(50 Y.O) as World Taekwondo Secretary General.

Seo has been serving as Acting Secretary General and Director General since October 2021. Seo has extensive knowledge having previously worked as head of the World Taekwondo Sport Department, as the President’s Chief of Staff and as Senior Director of Member Relations and Development.

Away from Taekwondo, Seo’s ability as an international sports expert has been recognised as he has served as a member of ASOIF Sustainability, Development and Education Consultative Group, and a member of International Relations Commission of Korean Sport and Olympic Commission. He also served as an ex-officio board member of the Kukkiwon.

Speaking on the appointment, World Taekwondo President Choue said:

“We are delighted to announce Jeongkang as World Taekwondo Secretary General. Jeongkang has done an excellent job as Acting Secretary General and proven he has the skills and leadership needed to manage the administration of our federation. Jeongkang has very strong experience in Taekwondo and is well known to the World Taekwondo family. With our 50^th anniversary coming up next year, we are sure that Jeongkang will play a big role in the continued development of our sport.”

World Taekwondo Secretary General Jeongkang Seo added:

“I am honoured to have been appointed to this prestigious position. I am passionate about ensuring that Taekwondo continues to build on the excellent progress it has made under the President’s leadership. I am confident that my knowledge of the sport and federation will help me make an important contribution to our development. 세계태권도연맹(WT, 총재 조정원)은 서정강(50) WT 총괄 국장을 신임 사무총장에 임명했다.

1972년생인 서정강 신임 사무총장은 WT 입사 후 경기부장 및 2012 런던 올림픽 기술통제관, 총재 비서실장, 국제협력국장과 총괄 국장 겸 사무총장 직무대행을 역임했다.

서 사무총장은 국제 스포츠 전문가로서 능력을 인정받아 ASOIF 스포츠개발위원과 대한체육회 국제위원을 역임하고 WT의 국기원 당연직 이사로 활동하며 태권도 유관기관과의 소통도 원활히 해왔다.

조정원 총재는 “다가오는 2023년과 2024년은 올림픽의 해이자 연맹 설립 50주년이 되는 WT에 특히 중요한 해로 서정강 사무총장을 임명하게 됐다”며 “WT 50년 사상 직원으로 시작해 사무총장에 임명된 경우가 처음이라 기대하는 바가 크다. 212개국 WT 회원국 간의 관계와 태권도 발전을 위해 최선을 다해줄 것이라고 믿는다”고 임명 취지를 설명했다.

서 사무총장은 “인내와 헌신이 요구되는 자리라고 생각하며 국가협회의 역량 강화에 더욱 힘쓰고, 외연 확장 못지않게 확고하게 내실을 갖춘 세계태권도연맹이 되도록 맡은 바 소임을 다하겠다.“라고 임명 소감을 밝혔다.

세계태권도연맹 사무총장은 2012년까지는 한국계 인사가 맡아오다가 2012년 스위스 출신인 장마리 아이어가 임명되었고, 2015년부터 2021년까지 이란계 미국인 하스 라파티가 사무총장직을 수행했다.
