Gyeong Gi-Do Taekwondo Association (President Kim Gyung-Duk, hereinafter “GTA”) has announced a  homeland visit event to invite senior Taekwondo instructors abroad from November 26, 2022 to November 30, 2022.

The homeland visit event invites overseas senior Taekwondo instructors who laid the groundwork for K-culture contents. About 40 to 50 years ago, they went abroad faraway foreign land in bare hands, started from scratch with a karate sign instead of Taekwondo sign, and worked hard night and day with sweat and tears.   

Without their strenuous and supreme efforts, it would have been impossible for Taekwondo to become one of the global martial arts.

When these senior Taekwondo instructors went abroad around the 1960s, GNP of South Korea could not reach 1,000 dollars. 

Now, South Korea has become an economic power, and its GNP exceeded 30,000 dollars. It is time for Taekwondo to show its noblesse oblige spirit and actively support spread of Taekwondo in underdeveloped countries. Especially, the hard work of senior instructors who have been devoting their whole life to Taekwondo should be rewarded.    

Considering such a background, GTA’s homeland visit event is perfectly timed. President Kim said “We plan to hold this event every year to please the overseas senior Taekwondo instructors. We must not forget about the past history and we must remember the people who wrote the history. We hope that the event would reward even a small part of their tremendous efforts and encourage them to have pride in themselves.”

In November 26, 2022, GTA will be inviting 8 senior Taekwondo instructors who are currently living abroad and 11 senior Taekwondo instructors who once worked abroad and came back to Korea to La Mera (Suwon World Cup Stadium) for banquet. The event schedule is as follows.

경기도태권도협회(회장 김경덕, 이하 GTA)는 ‘해외 태권도 원로사범 고국 방문 초청 행사’를 오는 11월 26일부터 30일까지 진행한다고 발표했다.

초청된 해외원로사범들은 26일 라메르아이(수원월드컵 경기장내)에서의 만찬을 시작으로 4박 5일간의 일정에 들어갈 예정이다.

이번 행사를 위해 고국 땅을 밟게 된 해외 원로사범들은 한류 문화 콘텐츠의 초석이 된 분들이라는 게 GTA 설명이다.

GTA 관계자는 “해외원로사범들은 40~50여 년 전 맨주먹으로 도복 하나만 가지고 이역만리 태권도 불모지 해외로 나갔다. 초창기 가라데 도장 간판을 걸고 눈물 젖은 빵을 먹으면서 설움 속에 오늘의 태권도가 있기까지 땀에 젖은 도복과 함께했다.” 면서 “이분들의 노력이 없었다면 과연 태권도가 이만큼 세를 확산시킬 수 있었을까 하는 의구심이 들 정도로 이분들의 노력은 지대한 것이다. 이런 분들을 초대해 고국의 발전된 모습을 보여주기 위해 마련된 행사이다”고 이번 행사 취지를 설명했다.

김경덕 회장은“이번에 초청된 해외원로사범들이 해외 진출 당시 1960년대는 우리나라 GNP가 1000달러도 못 미칠 정도였다. 이제는 경제 강국으로 3만 달러 시대에 돌입했다.”면서“태권도도 이에 걸맞게 노블레스 오블리주 정신으로 해외 저개발국에 태권도 보급확산을 위한 지원을 아끼지 말아야 하며 특히 그동안 수고하신 원로 시범들에 대해서도 그동안의 노고를 위로할 때가 된 것이 아닌가 생각한다. 늦은 감은 있기는 하나 GTA의 이번 행사는 시의적절한 것이 아닌가 싶다”고 덧붙였다.

이어 김회장은 “이번 행사를 필두로 앞으로 매년 실시할 것이다. 해외 노 사범님들에게 조그만 기쁨이라도 드리고 싶다.”면서 “우리는 절대로 과거 역사도 잊어서는 안 되지만, 그 역사를 써 내려간 주역들은 특히 잊어서는 안 된다. 이번 행사로 해외 원로사범들이 그동안의 수고에 천분의 일이라도 위로가 되고, 자부심을 갖기 바란다”고 말했다.
