What began as a routine training session turned into a life-altering tragedy for 19-year-old Heo Ju-Yong, a rising star in South Korea’s Taekwondo community. During a practice drill in April, Heo suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down.

Once known for his fierce spirit, technical skill, and Olympic-level ambition, Heo’s future was filled with promise. That promise now hinges on an uphill battle—one that includes intensive medical treatment, physical rehabilitation, and emotional recovery.

According to his coach, Master Beom Jin-Hyun, the accident was a freak incident that no one could have foreseen. “Ju-Yong was not just a talented athlete, but also a humble and hardworking young man with dreams that inspired everyone around him,” said Beom. “This accident broke all our hearts.”

Heo is currently hospitalized and undergoing specialized treatment. However, the road to even partial recovery is expected to be long and financially burdensome. His family, community, and fellow athletes have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the immense medical costs.

"다시 일어설 그날까지"

전신마비 태권도 꿈나무 허주용, 희망의 끈을 놓지 않습니다.

국가대표를 꿈꾸던 태권도 유망주 허주용(20) 군은 2년 전 훈련 도중 불의의 사고로 전신마비라는 청천벽력 같은 진단을 받았다. 고등학교 졸업을 앞두고 마지막 훈련에 임하던 중 발생한 사고였다. 수술은 간신히 성공했지만, 주용이는 목 아래가 모두 마비되는 평생 장애를 안고 살아가야만 했다.

절망의 순간에도 주용이는 꿈을 놓지 않았다. 하루하루를 재활에 매달리며 다시 한 번 삶의 가능성을 향해 나아가고 있다. 그러나 2년의 시간은 가족에게 경제적·정신적으로 너무나 큰 짐이 되었다. 치료비는 한계를 넘었고, 더는 감당이 어려운 상황.

주용이를 처음 태권도의 길로 이끌었던 범진현 사범은 “7살에 도장에 들어온 주용이는 매 대회 1등을 놓치지 않던 아이였다. 병문안을 가면 여전히 밝게 웃는 모습에 오히려 제가 눈물을 참을 수가 없다”며 말을 잇지 못했다.

어린 꿈나무였던 주용이는 이제 침대 위에서 다시 일어서는 법을 배우고 있다. 아직 목 아래는 거의 움직일 수 없지만, 포기란 없다. “할 수 있다”는 다짐으로 매일 고통스러운 재활을 견디고 있다.
