— A First Step Toward Cultivating the Next Generation of Officials —

SILICON VALLEY, CA — On March 8, the USA Headquarters Sport Committee (President Kwangil Bae) held its first Taekwondo referee seminar for youth black belts at the committee’s gymnasium in Silicon Valley.

The seminar featured Grandmaster Jong-Ryeol Lee—former Vice-Chairman of the USA Referee Committee and former Chairman of the California Referee Committee—who led the session alongside President Bae.and G.M Lion Chei  The program was designed to educate local Taekwondo instructors, current referees, and youth black belts on the precise regulations and operational standards of Taekwondo competition.

The initiative comes at a critical time, as Taekwondo tournaments across the United States face significant challenges in recruitment due to a shortage of qualified officials. In response, the Committee has introduced a "Preliminary Referee Training Program" for youth black belts as a long-term strategic solution, marking the beginning of a systematic educational curriculum.

The seminar balanced theoretical instruction with practical drills, focusing on the principles of fair play and the essential roles of a referee. Drawing on his extensive international experience, Grandmaster Lee provided in-depth insights into scoring criteria, officiating posture, and match management, drawing high levels of engagement from the participants.

"This seminar is more than just a training session; it is the starting point for cultivating the next generation of Taekwondo referees," stated Chairman Kwangil Bae. "We hope this provides an opportunity to instill the true spirit of Taekwondo and leadership in our youth, while simultaneously elevating the fairness and prestige of Taekwondo tournaments in the U.S."

He further added, "Through consistent referee education programs and seminars, we remain committed to growing alongside the local Taekwondo community, contributing to regional development and the global expansion of Korean culture."

In a related development, the USA Headquarters Sport Committee is scheduled to host the World Sports Elite Open Taekwondo Championship on May 16 at James Lick High School in San Jose, California.

- 차세대 심판 양성 ‘첫걸음’

미국중앙스포츠위원회(USA Headquarters Sport Committee, 회장 배광일)는 지난 3월 8일 미국 실리콘밸리에 위치한 위원회 체육관에서 유단자 청소년들을 대상으로 한 첫 태권도 심판 세미나를 개최했다.

이번 세미나는 전 미국 심판 부위원장과 캘리포니아 심판위원장을 역임한 이종렬 사범이 위원회의 초청으로 참여해 배광일 회장과 최창익 대사범 등과 함께 교육을 진행했다. 세미나는 지역 태권도 지도자와 심판, 그리고 유단자 청소년들을 대상으로 올바른 태권도 경기 규정과 심판 운영을 교육하기 위해 마련됐다.

현재 미국 전역에서 개최되는 태권도 대회는 심판 인력 부족으로 심판 위촉에 어려움을 겪고 있는 상황이다. 이에 위원회는 장기적인 해결책으로 유단자 청소년을 대상으로 한 ‘예비 심판 양성 프로그램’을 도입하고 체계적인 교육을 시작했다.

세미나는 태권도의 공정한 경기 운영과 심판의 역할을 중심으로 이론과 실기를 병행한 프로그램으로 진행됐다. 이종렬 사범은 다년간의 국제 심판 경험을 바탕으로 실제 경기에서 적용되는 판정 기준과 심판의 자세, 경기 운영의 원칙 등을 설명하며 참가자들의 높은 관심을 이끌어냈다.

배광일 회장은 “이번 세미나는 단순한 교육을 넘어 차세대 태권도 심판을 양성하는 출발점”이라며 “청소년들에게 올바른 태권도 정신과 리더십을 전달하고, 미국 태권도 대회의 공정성과 품격을 높이는 계기가 되길 바란다”고 말했다. 이어 그는 “앞으로도 지속적인 심판 교육 프로그램과 세미나를 통해 지역 태권도 커뮤니티와 함께 성장하며, 태권도를 통한 지역사회 발전과 한국 문화 확산에도 힘쓰겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 미국중앙스포츠위원회는 오는 5월 16일 미국 캘리포니아주 산호세에 위치한 제임스 릭 고등학교에서 ‘월드스포츠 엘리트오픈 태권도챔피언십’을 개최할 예정이다.
