Taekwondo's Challenge to Globalize"… The 2025 Seongnam Open International Taekwondo Competition has just ended successfully
The 2025 Seongnam Open International Taekwondo Competition, which was attended by 2,500 people from 23 countries around the world, was held successfully at Seongnam Indoor Gymnasium for two days from July 19 to 20. Seongnam City used the competition as an opportunity to promote the global sports city of Seongnam to the world beyond a simple sports event and spared unprecedented administrative and financial support at the city level.
Starting with performances by the Seongnam City Boys and Girls Choir, Withville Dance Team, and Kukki Won Demonstration Team as a pre-ceremony event on the first day of the competition, the official opening ceremony at 11 o'clock was attended by Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin, Seongnam City Sports Committee Chairman Lee Yong-ki, Organizing Committee Chairman Lee Dae-ki (Chairman of Seongnam City Taekwondo Association), and 1,000 taekwondo figures and athletes from home and abroad.
Mayor Shin Sang-jin emphasized in his welcoming speech that "Taekwondo is not just a sport but the spirit and culture of the Republic of Korea, and Seongnam aims to become the central city of this global Taekwondo diplomacy." He declared that "Seongnam City will spare no effort in administration and finance to support the internationalization of Taekwondo." This was followed by a speech by Organizing Committee Chairman Lee Dae-ki, a congratulatory message from Lee Yong-ki, President of the Seongnam Sports Council, and a video congratulatory message from Lee Dong-sup, President of the Kukkiwon, and Kim Pyeong, President of the Gyeonggi-do Taekwondo Association.
The competition consisted of six events, including competition, pumsae, speed kicks, breaking, taegwon gymnastics, and free pumsae, and athletes from various countries competed for friendship and competition across nationalities for two days. In particular, in the free pumsae category, high-level techniques with creative movements and storytelling were poured out, leading the audience to cheers.
For the first time in Korea, this competition introduced an electronic scoring system in some events, securing fairness and interest at the same time.
At the closing ceremony on the afternoon of the 20th, a touching scene was staged against the backdrop of Seongnam City's symbol along with the award of a medal. Lee Yong-ki, chairman of the Seongnam City Sports Council, said, "This competition was not just a competition, but a diplomatic stage to promote Seongnam's culture and dignity to the world," adding, "Next year's competition will be further expanded."
Seongnam City was evaluated as the "highest level of competition operation" by participants by establishing an "administrative one-stop system" throughout the entire competition, including stadium maintenance, accommodation support, interpretation volunteer arrangement, and shuttle bus operation.
Through this competition, Seongnam City once again imprinted its identity as a "hub city for Taekwondo exchange in Korea" beyond just a venue. In particular, the voluntary participation, support, and volunteer activities of citizens instilled a perception at home and abroad that "Taekwon is Seongnam's pride."

"Our association will further expand and develop the Seongnam International Open Taekwondo Competition in the future," said Lee Dae-gi, chairman of the organizing committee.
An official of the city also said, "Taekwon has firmly laid the foundation for its leap into the central city of taekwondo diplomacy around the world, along with its identity as Seongnam's pride. We will ensure that more countries and wider exchanges take place in next year's competition."

전세계 23개국 2,500여 명이 참가한 2025 성남오픈국제태권도대회가 7월 19일부터 20일까지 이틀간 성남실내체육관에서 성황리에 개최되었다. 성남시는 이번 대회를 단순한 체육행사를 넘어 글로벌 스포츠 도시 성남을 세계에 알리는 기회로 삼고 시 차원에서 전례 없는 행정·재정적 지원을 아끼지 않았다.
대회 첫날 오전 식전행사로 성남시립소년소녀합창단, 위드빌댄스팀, 국기원시범단의 공연을 시작으로 11시 공식 개회식은 신상진 성남시장과 이용기 성남시 체육회장, 이대기 조직위원장(성남시태권도협회장), 국내외 태권도 인사 및 선수단 1,000여 명이 참석한 가운데 화려한 개회식이 열렸다.
신상진 시장은 환영사에서 “태권도는 단순한 스포츠가 아니라 대한민국의 정신이자 문화이며, 성남은 이 세계 태권도 외교의 중심도시로 도약하고자 합니다”라고 강조하며, “성남시는 태권도의 국제화를 위해 행정과 재정을 아끼지 않고 지원할 것”이라고 선언했다. 이어 이대기 조직위원장의 대회사, 이용기 성남시 체육회장의 축사, 이동섭 국기원장, 김평 경기도태권도협회장의 화상 축사가 이어졌다.
경기 종목은 겨루기, 품새, 스피드 발차기, 격파, 태권체조, 자유품새 등 6개로 구성되었으며, 양일간 다양한 국가에서 참가한 선수들이 국적을 초월한 우정과 경쟁을 펼쳤다. 특히 자유품새 부문에서는 창의적인 동작과 스토리텔링이 가미된 고난이도 기술이 쏟아지며 관중들의 환호를 이끌었다.
이번 대회는 국내 최초로 일부 종목에서 전자채점 시스템을 도입, 공정성과 흥미를 동시에 확보했다.
20일 오후 폐막식에서는 메달 수여와 함께 성남시의 상징을 배경으로 한 감동적인 장면이 연출되었다. 이용기 성남시체육회장은 “이 대회는 단지 경쟁이 아닌, 성남의 문화와 품격을 세계에 알리는 외교 무대였다”고 자평하며, “내년 대회는 더욱 확대 개최될 예정”이라고 밝혔다.
성남시는 경기장 정비, 숙박 지원, 통역 자원봉사 배치, 셔틀버스 운영 등 대회 전 과정에 걸쳐 ‘행정 원스톱 체제’를 구축함으로써 참가자들로부터 ‘최고 수준의 대회 운영’이라는 평가를 받았다.
성남시는 이번 대회를 통해 단순한 개최지를 넘어, ‘대한민국 태권도 교류의 허브 도시’로서의 정체성을 다시 한번 각인시켰다. 특히 시민들의 자발적 참여와 응원, 자원봉사 활동은 “태권도는 성남의 자랑”이라는 인식을 국내외에 심어주었다.
이대기 조직위원장은 “우리 협회는 향후 성남국제오픈태권도대회를 더욱 확대 발전 시키겠다.”며 강한 포부를 밝혔다.
또한,성남시 관계자는 “태권도는 성남의 자랑이라는 정체성과 함께, 세계 태권도 외교의 중심 도시로 도약할 수 있는 기반을 확실히 다졌다. 내년 대회에는 더 많은 국가, 더 넓은 교류가 이뤄지도록 하겠다." 밝혔다.
