President of Kukkiwon Lee Dong-sup received the Maha Sirivadha, the highest grade of the Cambodian Kingdom's Monisaraphon Order, at 3:30 p.m. on September 8 in the interview room of the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

Official recognition of his contribution to the development of Taekwondo in Cambodia over the past 30 years, he awarded the highest-grade medal to the President of Kukkiwon Lee. In particular, it can be said that the medal is based on the dedicated efforts of Taekwondo Master Choi Yong-seok, who dispatched Taekwondo to Cambodia, a barren place of Taekwondo.

The medal training was conducted from June in Cambodia to recognize the contribution of Taekwondo to the community and the public through the promotion of Taekwondo self-defense techniques in the field of the Korea Taekwondo Association. This training was led by Taekwondo Master Choi Yong-seok, who has been dispatched for the past 30 years.

The Monisaraphone, which was awarded to individuals who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions in various fields such as literature, art, education, science and society, and business, is a prestigious medal.

An official from Kukkiwon said, "The Cambodian government appreciates Kukkiwon's continuous taekwondo supply project and the dedication of Taekwondo Master Choi Yong-seok, who has contributed greatly to the development of Taekwondo by being dispatched to Cambodia over the past 30 years." TaeChoi Yong-seok, who first entered Cambodia in 1996, served as the coach of the Cambodian national taekwondo team and devoted his life to expanding the base of taekwondo and fostering players. His efforts created a taekwondo craze throughout Cambodia, bearing the fruits of being the first gold medal in Cambodia's history in 60 years at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. As a result, he was dubbed the "Cambodian national hero" and personally won the Cambodian top medal.

President Lee said, "This medal is an honor not only for me and Kukkiwon, but also for all Taekwondo families who love Taekwondo." "We will continue to work harder on global public interest activities and cultural diplomacy through Taekwondo." 

This is interpreted as a statement suggesting that it is possible thanks to the blood, sweat, and passionate efforts of field Taekwondo teachers such as Choi Yong-seok.

Meanwhile, 54 Taekwondo teachers are currently active in 54 foreign countries.

이동섭 국기원장은 지난 9월 8일 오후 3시 30분 캄보디아 교육청소년체육부 접견실에서 캄보디아 왕국 모니사라폰(Monisaraphon) 훈장의 최고 등급인 마하 세리야바타(Maha Sirivaddha)를 받았다. 

지난 30년간 캄보디아 태권도 발전에 기여한 공로를 공식 인정하며 국기원 이 원장에게 최고등급 메달을 수여했다. 특히 태권도의 불모지였던 캄보디아에 태권도를 파견한 최용석 사범의 헌신적인 노력이 바탕이 된 메달이라고 할 수 있다.

이번 훈장 수훈은 지난 6월부터 캄보디아에서 실시한 국기원 실전 태권도 호신술 보급과 지난 30여 년간 최용석 파견사범을 통해 태권도가 현지 사회와 국민들에게 공익적으로 기여한 성과를 인정받아 진행됐다.

이 원장이 수훈한 모니사라폰(Monisaraphon)은 문학, 예술, 교육, 과학 사회, 사업 등 다양한 분야에서 뛰어난 공로를 인정받은 개인에게 수여되는 권위 있는 훈장이다.

국기원 관계자는 "캄보디아 정부는 국기원의 지속적인 태권도 보급 사업과 지난 30년간 캄보디아에 파견되어 태권도 발전에 크게 기여한 최용석 사범의 헌신을 높이 평가하는 시사가 있다"고 말했다.

1996년 캄보디아에 처음 입국한 최용석 선수는 캄보디아 태권도 국가대표팀 감독을 역임하며 태권도 저변 확대와 선수 육성에 평생을 바쳤습니다. 그의 노력은 2014 인천 아시안게임에서 60년 만에 캄보디아 역사상 첫 금메달이라는 결실을 맺으며 캄보디아 전역에 태권도 열풍을 일으켰습니다. 그 결과 '캄보디아 국민 영웅'이라는 칭호를 받았으며, 개인적으로도 캄보디아 최고 메달을 수상한 바 있다.

이동섭 원장은 "이번 훈장은 나와 국기원뿐만 아니라 태권도를 사랑하는 태권도 가족 모두에게 주어지는 영광"이라며 "앞으로도 태권도를 통한 글로벌 공익 활동과 문화 외교에 더욱 힘쓰겠다"고 말했습니다 

이것은 최용석 사범과 같은 현장 사범들의 피와 땀 그리고 열정적노력 덕분에 가능하다는 것을 암시하는 발언으로 해석된다.

앞서 이 원장은 2023 몽골한국주간 행사에 초청돼 8월29일 몽골정부로 부터 외교훈장도 받은 바 있다.

한편, 현재 해외 54개국에서 54명의 태권도 사범이 활동하고 있다.

관계당국과 국기원은 향후에도 최용석을 비롯한 해외 파견 사범들의 활동을 적극 지원하고 태권도를 통해 세계 평화와 문화 교류에 앞장설 계획이다.
